Robert's Story

Went to Cal Poly SLO. Got a degree in Architectural Design. Took and passed the State's exam and became an Architect. Used it to obtain overseas contracts. Worked in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and South Korea. Used the contracts to travel to the places i wanted to see. Spent some time in Germany and Switzerland to study timber frame homes. Spent time in Spain to study the gardens of the Alhambra and the small hillside cities. From Korea I was able to spend time in Japan and used it to study the gardens of Kyoto, along with some side trips to Australia and New Zealand, Using what I learned in Germany I got to design some really nice homes for some folks. Also designed a number of recreational projects for various US military clients, My favorite was a really great water park for the Army. Currently: a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission for the lovely little city of Cottonwood AZ. and working for a Civil Engineer in Sedona,, doing moderately large and small scale civil projects around central Arizona.. Adventures along the way. One of the nice things about my bucket list was that there was not anything life threatening. One of nice things about doing contracts with the US military is that you get base privileges and one of the nice things of base privileges is having access to the USO. The USO is one nicest and all time great organizations in the military world... As part of that access I was able to sometimes help them and they were also able sometimes to help me. One of the nice thing I got access to was a one week Cru...Expand for more
ise of the Nile. On My bucket list were visiting Hatsheput's funerary comp0lex in Egypt, visiting the gardens of the Alhambra in Spain, ditto for the gardens of Kyoto in Japan. I was able to do all these things thanks to the USO. Along with Nile cruise that took me to the funerary complex, came the Great Pyramids, The Temple of Karnak,. Sobek's Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Aswan Dam and other less well known sites. Also with it came mini adventures. Like, descending in a shaft in an Egyptian tomb when the lights went out. Now it should not have been a surprise to anyone.. The wiring was visible and nailed into the rock walls like something from the beginning of the last century. Exposed two piece porcelain insulators with fabric coated wires running through them. So, the lights went out. Now if one had observe the system one would think that lights going out happened fairly frequently and the the people running at the site would deal with it quickly but some people started to panic..People below started shouting and moving around unnecessarily.. I started with some soothing words but that wasn't working. Fortunately I always carry a small (like about 4" long) flashlight in my camera bag. So I reached in the bag, pulled it out and lit it up, shined it down the shaft, said some more calming words and that seemed to work it.. Maybe 20 seconds later the lights came back on and we were able to continue our decent. There was nothing heroic about it but I was at least able to help in a very small way in a incredibly small corner of the world.
