Robert's Story
Life
I have to say that much of memories seem to be a blur these days. But I have had a chance to talk to a few classmates and relive some of the old days.
I am still in Douala Cameroon and still like it. I will have been here for a three and ½ years in May 20008. I expect to receive a new assignment soon, and finally leave Cameroon in June or July. There are many modern things about Douala, fine restaurants, great friends, and lots of wine and Champagne. The country of Cameroon is 8th worldwide for the consumption of Champagne! I have been in the US Foreign Service (State Department) for about sixteen years and expect to retire 2012, which is beginning to seem close now. But working in the Foreign service has been a dream come true for me, living oversea's, and traveling world wide.
Since 1991, I have lived in Lome, Togo, Abidjan, Cote I'vore, and Cairo Egypt and Port au Prince, Haiti. I am hoping my new assignment will take me to Europe or Asia. ople to Iraq. Their effectiveness is minimal, since it is too dangerous to travel around the region.
I was married for 16 years, but now divorced. I have a 24 year old son and a 22 year old daughter. My son is taking a break from college, needs one more class to finish. My daughter is at American University in DC now, having attended college in Canada and Mexico, with one more year to go. Both kids graduated from Ashbury College (a high school) in Canada in 2003. After about 5 years of college studies they wait tables! Well, its life experience I suppose!
Recently Claude (my partner of 7 years) and I vacationed in Bangkok, Phuket and Kenya. We had a great time for three weeks, visiting temples in Bangkok, taking short island hops in Phuket on the coast and taking a photo safari in Mt. Kenya. In Kenya, we also had a chance to visit the breeding program for endangered species, especially the Bongo.
I am planning to attend the 40th reunion, I think it will be great fun, and I hope to see many others there too! It will be nice to be back in Vegas for a visit.
Cheers to all, Rob Heater
