Robert's Story
College
I attended the Rollins College Hamilton Holt School from the summer of 1988 until December 1993. I graduated in May of 1994. My major was humanities and I took many history courses and actually recorded an A in World War II which was instructed by Dr. Barry Levis. I was working throughout this period at a travel agency during the day, and attended courses at night. Therefore I never took more than 2 courses a term. One of my favorite professors was Charlie Rodgers and I took American Film and The History of Radio and Television from him. It was not easy returning to college at age 30 and it took me a couple of courses to get up to speed. I never missed a class in my 5 and a half years there. I finished with a rounded up 3.0 average. After graduation I took the Politics of Latin America from Dr. Luis Valdes in which I had to give my fullest effort to attain a B. All in all I enjoyed my time at Rollins in the night school program.
Workplace
I worked for my parents travel agency, Hook Travel Service, in Winter Park from January of 1977 unitl August of 1981. I enjoyed the flexibility of working for the family business. When we sold the business I worked for International Travel Agency in Orlando from October 1981 until March of 1984. This was convenient to where I was living. Worked for Thomas Cook Travel in Altamonte Springs from A...Expand for more
pril of 1984 until November of 1987. Did my best to support my favorite airline Eastern Airlines while there. I really enjoyed working for my boss Don McCaffree. Tragically he died in a car accident in the Atlanta area in the early 1990's.
After leaving Thomas Cook Travel I worked for my parents new agency, Bestway Travel in College Park on Edgewater Drive just south of the high school. I was there from December of 1987 until we sold the business in 1991. Worked independently for Nortrav Travel ( the successor business to Hook Travel ) in Winter Park on Park Avenue once again from 1993 until the closure of the business in 2001. Nora Roddenberry, the owner/manager was very knowledgeable about selling travel.
While working as an independent agent I finished up at Rollins College at night and also switched careers to being a pharmacy technician. I joined Walgreens Healthcare Plus in February of 2000 and have enjoyed working as a pharmacy technician. I interpret prescriptions with the use of a computer at my desk. Working Wednesday through Friday nights and Saturday during the day. It is great to have 3 days off each week. I really like the company as well. It is now primarily a facility to assist our retail stores. As of July 15, 2012, I have not missed a single scheduled day of work since I arrived in early 2000 ( knock on wood ).
