Robert's Story
Several years ago, I was injured while I was working for a police department. Since that time, I have had to deal with the resulting disability... seizure disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. In 1997, quite by accident, I found out about service dogs for individuals with seizure and post-traumatic stress disorders. After a diligent search, I found Shadow, a big, beautiful black Lab(Shadow). The difference Shadow has made in helping me overcome some of my anxieties about this disability has been remarkable. Over the years that have followed, as my disability has changed, so to has he adapted to whatever has
been and is required to keep me going forward. What is equally remarkable is the number of people who are ignorant of the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) and/or service dogs in public and private sectors. We ...Expand for more
have therefore set out as one of our goals to both assist other with service dogs and the education of other about service dogs.
Shadow Retired 21December2007
After may great years of service and before he passes. I have placed him on the retired list for his last couple years of life. This has been one of the hardest thing I have had to do in my life. However working him till he dropped would have been even worse for both him and me. While he now leads a life of leisure. His replacement Teal'C shows me the thing I missed and forgot about working with a very young dog. It also reaffirms my retiring of my great companion of the last 10+ years.
Shadow passed away 28March2009
He passed in his sleep of old age.
We have traveled the world and will continue, for I will never with the help of my K9 companion fear my disability.
