Robert's Story
Well, it's 2/24/14, I'm still in New York. I'm 66 now but still working - nothing better to do. Was just thinking that on Class Night someone wrote that at this stage I would be working as a "waiter" in a French restaurant. Well, believe it or not, I still speak French, thanks to the competent teaching of Mrs. Jane Kendall Page, and I am working. I'm in West Hartford, Connecticut for a few weeks playing the role of Pickering in "Higgins in Harlem", a black version of My Fair Lady, and before coming here I filmed a short scene for the 13th episode of "Orange is the New Black" for its upcoming season. I play Dr. Oliver. Through the years I have wondered who came up with that "waiter" thing, but no matter, I finally may be reaching my goal. I still remember some of the coaching I received from Mr. Hughes and Mrs. Sutton - the process doesn't change, just the age of the performer. Also did some print modeling, but I have no idea where those photos will appear. But it's great to be sitting in a bar having a drink with a friend and have a total stranger walk up to you with a magazine in their hand and ask "is that you?" ving a pretty good time and just look forward to things getting better and better. God knows, I've paid my dues.
Life
I've been in New York since 1970 and came here to follow a dream to become a professional actor. I did a few short tours with several music groups working as a singer; I finally became a member of Actors Equity doing a play written by Ossie Davis (by the way, I don't think he liked my performance); and I created the role of "Hot Stuff" in a musical based on a play by Langston Hughes and written by the composer of "Raisin". Basically it's been hit and miss, mostly miss. Recently I booked an ad for Kodak (the guard in a photo gallery) which you might see in a national magazine, worked as the Ambassador from Mali in the film "The Interpreter" and I recently did an "Old Spice" ad for Satchi & Satchi (I'm the hot dog vendor). Had a few close calls wth some "plum" roles, but as they say, no cigar. I just keep trucking!
A little change - if you were watching Saturday Night Live last week (11/2/13), the grandfather in the comedy skit, well, that was me. Yes I have reach the "Grandpa" stage, but as the song goes, "I'll not complain!"
