Robert's Story
Life
After leaving Valley High to attend boarding school in Scottsdale Arizona, I eventually graduated from UCLA in 1965 with a degree in Bacteriology. I returned to the Univ. of Arizona where I did an MS in Biochemistry then went back to Los Angeles and worked for a year in a research laboratory. That experience led me back to Arizona and I obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the College of Medicine in 1975.
I was a postdoctoral fellow at the UCLA School of Medicine until 1979 when I joined the staff as an Assistant Professor in the Neurology Department. At UCLA I met my wife Carol. She was a research member of my postdoctoral mentor's staff. We have been together 42 years now and are still going strong. Carol was born and raised on Lido Isle in Newport Beach. Her dad was a boat builder and she grew up sailing. She loves to fly fish and ties her own flies.
I worked in the Pharmaceuutical industry from 1981 to 2004 when I retired. I spent 10 years in research and development before moving into Quality Control. I started in quality by running a Product Stability group and ended up as Director of Quality Chemistry and Stability. I had responsibility for release testing of all product manufactured along with method development and implementation for all new or proposed product lines. I enjoyed interfacing with ...Expand for more
the FDA and foreign regulatory agencies.
Until 2004 I loved to surf, sail and I taught snow skiing for 10 years in the local mountains. I was offered a position as ski instructor at Mammoth Mountain but wasn't ready to retire then. In 2004 I had two back surgeries that over time have not ended up well. I've lost most of the function in my right leg and my general movement and balance are not good. Still get around but can't surf, ski or sail anymore. The FAA decided that with my loss of function in my right leg that I couldn't renew my pilots license so I've been grounded.
After retiring in 2004 my wife got tired of me sitting around the house so I decided to go to our local JC and retake my calculus. I never really learned it the first time round as I was a good pre-med student - didn't really learn anything but could and did memorize everything that was put in front of me. I enjoyed my math courses so much that ended up with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics in 2010 and tutored at the JC where I started my math classes in their Math Study Hall 4 days a week and realy enjoyed being around the kids. I loved teaching when I was at UCLA and I while I was able to get around I enjoyed tutoring math at the JC.
I have lost track of most of my friends from Albuquerque over the years and would like to reconnect if possible.
