Robert's Story
College
My first attempt at college was a complete bust. Within two semesters I was on academic probation at Colorado State University. When I returned on my own terms though and without the scholarships I did quite well. In fact, with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in Ciminology and Correctional Administration, a Masters in Business Administration, and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence, some people say I was a career student!
Workplace
I've spent the past 37 years in criminal justice. I began my career in the Marine Corps in military police and corrections. I retired from the Texas prison system in 1998 having risen through the ranks from corrections officer to Senior Warden. I practiced law in Texas for a little while, specializing in rent law (anything t...Expand for more
hat would pay the rent.) Then I accepted a job in Oregon as the Superintendent (Warden) of the largest prison in the northwest, before accepting my current position as the Direcotr of the Wyoming Department of Corrections.
Military
I joined the Marine Corps in the spring of 1974 with a guaranteed 5431 MOS (Military Police/Corrections). I received a promotion out of San Diego boot camp and another following training in Fort Gordon, Georgia. I reported to the Marine Barracks at Naval Base San Diego as a Lance Corporal (E-3) and discharged as Deputy Chief of the Administrative Section of the Regional Correctional Facility at Camp Pendleton California. After four years of honorable active service and two years of inactive reserves I discharged as an E-6 Staff Sergeant.
