Robert's Story

Hello all, Born in Seattle, came to Ft, Lauderdale via Levittown, N.Y. a few blocks from where Billy Joel grew up. At Stranahan, underachiever in some things, overachiever in others. I needed a good kick in the butt. No one would give me one (although I think Lexie Wilkes tried), so I graduated from SHS and kicked my own butt. And now, the rest of the story: Where to begin. I guess my pursuits have usually been dominated by the need to be among the first to know or the need for adrenaline rush. After dabbling in aviation...the ground floor of aviation at Eastern Air Lines while going to BJC, and while doing so, learned to fly, soloed, thenI decided the world would be a safer place if I stayed away from the cockpit. Decades later, as a TV reporter in San Diego I got to fly in Blue Angells' F/A 18 plane number 7, their 2-seat trainer-backup plane. I spent 10 years in the Army Reserve, and became a commissioned officer after the first 2 years, after going on active duty to the Infantry Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA, AKA Benning School for Boys. An obligatory but abortive go at family business, then I moved on to broadcasting, where I stayed for 41 years, and remain today. I started at a radio station in Miami (WKAT), moved on to a radio/TV operation in WPB (WEAT) where I became Operations Manager of two radio stations, did on air work, radio and TV commercials and weekend TV sports and hosted 4 MDAA telethons. I moved over to news when the TV station was sold and the news director asked me to anchor weekends and report three days a week. Also shot and edited news film, then video when the technology replaced sprocket holes. After gaining anchor and producer experience I moved to a main anchor job at the CBS station in Little Rock Arkansas, then Toledo, Ohio where, besides anchoring and reporting, I hosted a weekly live call-in show called Hotline. There was a stint in Miami at WTVJ and finally the move to San Diego, CA where I anchored and reported news...Expand for more
until 1991. I decided to pursue my passion, my own business, after spending a month in Saudi Arabia just before the first Gulf War, desert storm. I was living with Camp Pendelton Marines and reporting on the troop build-up. I filed 21 news reports and produced a half-hour documentary. No time to sleep...lots of time to think. What a dangerous combination. Anyway, just after the war ended I left the protective womb of corporate TV to start my own production company. After a decade I started making the move to new media/the Internet, DVD, CDROM. Now most of my work time is spent developing web-base streaming media and some silly little pet projects. Recent years have been a challenge since I am dealing with Parkinson's. I also had Thyroid Cancer, but it is cured. I am married to Donna, a wonderful, beautiful woman who has to be one of the most patient people on earth to put up with me for 35 years. My daughter and son are great people and I cherish my relationship with them. My 12 year old grandson, Wilder,...don't get me started! We adopted Bailey the Wonder Dog from a shelter eight years ago. He's a high spirited Bichon Havanese (decended from dogs brought from Malta to Cuba 300 years ago) who has stolen my heart. You can see him and Donna at LeaveOnlyPawPrints.com. It has been a wild ride from interviews with five presidents, one in the oval office, to interviews with Chuck Yeager, John Glenn, Ceasar Chavez, Rose Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, the Beach Boys, Yoko Ono, Dr. Jonas Salk, Dr. Benjamin Spock, Dr. Seuss, to dancing with the Rockettes, and a list that goes on and on, to our amazing two-week trip to Kenya (See photo). Donna, is an international trade show company manager and an accomplished writer, We Ilive in West Los Angeles near the Santa Monica border. Everyday is still full of surprises and life is good. Bless you all. All the best, Bob Lawrence (Trigg) PS: I changed my name when I started in TV. Nobody could seem to catch the name Trigg on the air.
