Robert's Story
Looking back, my chosen career path is what allowed me to live life on my terms. I was always intrigued by the people and the history of our planet. Over time, I often took time off from my practice to travel the world. I would close my practice, sell my house and vehicle, put all of my worldly possessions in storage, and embark on globetrotting sometimes for a year, but one time for two years. During these journeys, I lived on a commune in Berlin & on an Ashram in India; trekked the Andes in Patagonia, the Himalayas in Nepal & the Alps in Switzerland; camped in the Moroccan Sahara via Camel; joined Elephant safaris in India and Thailand; attended numerous world festivals; visited the great museums, art galleries, & opera houses of the world; undertook a lengthy Safari from South Africa to Kenya; visited archeological ruins in Java, Cambodia, Mexico, Egypt and Peru; observed all of the natural and man-made wonders of the world, and twice walked the 500-mile ancient pilgrimage path called The Camino de Santiago, from France, across Spain. Years ago, after traveling to my 100th country, I met a German who asked me, “why not w...Expand for more
ait until you retire to see the world?" I explained that this is something that could not wait. We do not know what the future holds for us. We may not live long enough to experience “retirement.” Our health may not allow us to travel. Our financial resources may be limited at retirement. There may be unforeseen circumstances that may prevent us from leaving the country, such as a war or a pandemic. As we sit in our houses, in lockdown or quarantine, on this 50th Anniversary of our graduation we are experiencing something a few of us could have ever imagined. As most of us are now retired we have more time on our hands to do those things we have been waiting for all of our lives to do. If one of those things is to travel the world, you may have to wait a little longer. Then again, traveling to distant parts of the world may not be on your bucket list. My biggest regret in life was not discovering I had a son until I was over 60 (Thank you Ancestry.com) and not being able to raise my grandchild. Life is like a box of chocolates. A great philosopher once wrote, "Life is NOTHING until it is lived." I have lived my life.
