Robert's Story

Tell a story? A story... there are so many from back then. Let's see, there was the time we spent weeks trying to get Frank DeVore to think his house was haunted... The Estes rocket bazooka Shawn Rice and I made and fired accidently on Bruce Robinson... All the wild times on Catalina Island... Hiding a snake in Mr Bridges' coffee cup... Who made those exploding ping-pong balls, anyway?... What about the day we all got kicked out of Coco's because two friends (not to be mentioned) went nuts and started dancing on the table... I know! The day we found a hole in the playground fence. We were at lunch recess on a typical gray day in Old Tustin where I was doing time at a private school. I think we were third graders. Anyway, while playing baseball, I noticed a loose board in the back fence as we chased after a fly ball. Being curious, we decided to squeeze through the fence and go on an adventure. I remember that Jim Johnson was there, Kevin Pederson and Steve Polati, were there too. Our adventure led us past the A and W to a favorite spot of ours - Prentice Park. Back then the park had a zoo and you could go around feeding the animals. Unfortunately, we didn't have any money to buy peanuts and we couldn't find any food lying around except, well, do you remember when we bought baseball cards and they came with a HUGE chunk of bubble gum with ...Expand for more
them in the pack? Feeling sorry for the animals, we thought we'd give them some gum. Most of the critters at the zoo showed little interest in it, but this wasn't true for the monkeys. In fact, the monkeys loved it. They just kept chewing it and sticking their hands out for more, and more, and more. It wasn't long before we had given them all the gum we had. Well, in no time at all, those poor critters started to get that gum stuck in their fur and stretch it out all over their cage. Naturally, we thought it was funny at first, but then we realized that the gum sticking all over the monkeys' bodies was upsetting them and they couldn't get it off. All the monkeys even lined up one behind the other trying to nit-pick gum wads out, but to no avail; they just made things all the worse. Boy, did we feel sad for those poor critters. I imagined all those monkeys having to have their hair shaved off, and that we were going to be in a lot of trouble if the zoo keeper caught us. So, I suggested to the guys that we'd had better head back to school before we got caught - we RAN all the way back. We reached the fence with the loose board and squeazed back onto the ball field just as the bell rang. Before we ran off to Mr. Smiderly's religion class, we carefully put the board back in place so that we could escape again another day on a new adventure.
