Robert's Story
Life
After graduating from Crestmoor High in 1965, I attended College of San Mateo and San Jose State University, earning a B.A. in journalism. I sang in the A Capella Choir at CSM under Galen Marshall and the Men's Glee Club at San Jose State under Dr. Brent Heisinger. I wrote for The San Matean at CSM and then was a member of the Radio Television News Center at San Jose State.
I wrote for the San Bruno Herald until I moved to Springfield, Illinois, in September 1969, where I studied at Concordia Theological Seminary. I wrote for the student newspaper there. Then, I returned to San Bruno in May 1970 and did mostly office work. I occasionally contributed items to the San Bruno Herald until 1985. I also joined the Masterworks Chorale in September 1970 and sang under Galen Marshall until February 1985. In 1976, I ran unsuccessfully for City Clerk of San Bruno, my only attempt at running for public office. (I finished third in a field of six candidates.) I was active in the Capuchino Community Theatre from 1982 to 1985, even serving on the board of directors.
In July 1985 I married and we moved from San Bruno to Montara in November 1985. I continued to do office work in San Francisco and on the Peninsula. Then, in May 1989, my first wife and I took an extended trip across the country. We moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where I did some graduate studies at Concordia Theological Seminary (which had moved to Fort Wayne in 1976) and earned an M.A. in Religious Studies. I worked for Seminary Relations, editing two publications and doing some radio broadcasts on WOWO. I sang in the Schola Cantorum and the Kantorei, a touring choir. My delayed vicarage (internship) was in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and ended in February 1992. I did not become as a pastor. We then moved back...Expand for more
to Indiana and I returned to office work.
In July 1992 I began serving as a program host for WBNI, a National Public Radio station, where I still do weekly broadcasts. Then, in April 1993, I began working as an editor for the Allen County Times. I also worked for the Roanoke News for about a year. Then, I was divorced in 1996. I worked from September 1997 to July 1998 at the Northwest News in Huntertown. I returned to the Allen County Times in November 2000.
I married Sally Brudi, who I met at Concordia Lutheran Church, in October 1999 and moved to her house in Fort Wayne. We have taken a number of trips, including annual return trips to the Bay Area to visit my mother (after my father died in September 2002).
My newspaper work ended in June 2002 and continued to work in offices. In 2005, after doing mostly temporary work, I began working permanently as an imaging processor at Kaman Industrial Technologies in downtown Fort Wayne. I retired from Kaman on December 30, 2016.
In recent years, I have contributed reviews of recordings and videos for amazon.com and have written and edited articles for wikipedia.org. Since 2001, I have sung in the Concordia Praise Singers at my church; we have taped songs for the syndicated "Worship Anew" program. I have led a small group Bible study at Concordia.
My wife and I return about once a year to the Bay Area to see my mother, who lives in South San Francisco, as well as some of our friends. We also take other trips, usually by car, around the country. The pandemic made it impossible to visit my mother in 2020 and we are waiting for an easing of restrictions this year so we can see her again.
We visited New York City and Washington D.C. in October 2009; the picture of me in front of the U.S. Capitol was taken at that time.
