Bob's Story
I hate the Q and A things so will just give a short synopsis of where I am and how I got here. After high school I went to SMS and did poorly. Forgot it was an educational experience and mostly a social one. I joined the Army for the GI bill and one thing led to another and I stayed for 32 years. Roughly half overseas including Desert Storm with the Big Red One. Bailed when I stopped having fun in 2002 and found a job in the Pentagon with the CIO's office as a contractor. When OEF/OIF broke out I was in on the early planning and facilitation and over the last 5 years I have made 25 trips to the middle east and have spent over a year there in total. I have loved every minute of the time. The photo is bogus but was a John Wayne minute for sure. The weapons are loaned but the photo was taken in Baghdad in 2006 on one of th...Expand for more
e trips there.
While I have been playing soldier I have been married to the same woman for 36 years and have 3 kids who I love but probably should have spent more time with.
Sarah and I live in Northern Virginia and I work in the Pentagon still. Have not been back to Springfield in 6 years since my Aunt died but would come back for a reunion if there is one this year. I occasionally hunger for midwestern values and grow tired of the commute here, but it would take a major event to get me out of here. I rarely think about high school and since I came in my junior year never felt a real part of any crowd there. I have few really great memories other than being a roadie for Charlie McCalls band. That was where I picked up the bad habits that lead me to disaster at SMS. I do hope all are as lucky as I have been in life.
