Robert's Story
After St. Mary's, I attended Providence College and graduated in 1968. I was recruited my Senior year for a position in Washington, D.C. with the Government Accountability Office (GAO). GAO supports the U.S. Congress with independent studies and analyses to improve Federal programs and operations. During my 35 years with GAO, I traveled extensively domestically and internationally, lived in Europe for four years, conferred with U.S. and foreign governmental and private sector leaders, testified before Congress, and did and observed some really neat stuff. After GAO I worked 10 additional years--first with the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives and second with the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction. I retired in April 2013. My wife and I were married in 1969 after I completed training with the Air Force. We have two children, and six grandchildren. In 2011, we moved to an active adult community 35 miles from the U.S. Capitol. g Congress and Federal Agencies on how to improve programs and operations and I can't see that they've learned anything. My bucket list includes visiting the few states I haven't seen and the parts of the world I haven't seen or want to return to. Since retirement, we’ve traveled to Kenya and Tanzania on a camera safari; climbed Peru’s mountains; explored the Amazon; traveled throughout Italy for 35 straight days; cruised the Danube; and visited Israel’s holy sites, Golan Heights, and border with Syria. We thoroughly enjoyed spending quality time with our children and grandchildren on our 50th anniversary cruise in July 2019. A few months later, my wife and I cruised from Normandy to Paris visiting Mont St. Michel, the Normandy beaches, and other interesting towns and sights along the Seine. At the completion of that cruise, I utilized my genealogical research to visit towns in France from which our ancestors emigrated to Canada in the 1600s. We had planned to visit Egypt and Eastern Europe in 2020 but all those plans were cancelled due to Covid-19. God willing, we'll be able to resume our travels with Egypt in 2021 and Australia/New Zealand in 2022.
