Robert's Story
Bob Pickett has been a practicing attorney since 1972 in New Jersey
when he joined the prestigious firm of McCarter & English, Esqs., the
largest firm in N.J., specializing in corporate and educational matters. As an
attorney, Bob has vast experience in complex litigation, both civil and
criminal, and appellate litigation. He is a member of the Bars of the State of
Michigan and New Jersey, the U.S. Supreme Court, The U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals for the 3rd and 6th Circuits.
Bob has been an on-air personality & co-host for KISS-FM’s and
WBLS-FM’s Award winning Sunday morning public affairs program,
OPENLINE (8 A.M. to 9 A.M. with an OnLine 2nd Hour), along with Bob
Slade and music legend, James Mtume for 20 years. Bob was also on
on-air personality on KISS- FM’s former Sunday evening weekly news (11
P.M.) Program, WEEK IN REVIEW, with Bob Slade, Charles “The
CutMan” Etheridge and Peter ‘the Flamethrower” Noel for nearly 20 years.
Bob was also the Executive Producer, Writer & Producer of The
Legend Series for KISS-FM and Producer for KISS-FM’s Soul Beginnings
Show – a nostalgic look back at R&B music and the events that shaped the
music----which won the NY Metro A.I.R. Award for Best Evening Show in
NYC.
Bob is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his activities
as an attorney and as a radio personality on KISS-FM and WBLS-FM,
including two Achievement In Radio Awards for the Best Public Affairs
Show in NY, The OpenLine Show, and the Garden State Association of
Black Journalists award for the Best Syndicated Show, Visions of Black
America, as producer and writer for the series.
Bob received his JurisDoctorate degree from The University of
Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and undergraduate degree
with honors from the Honors College at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio,
where he was active on the campus and President of the Student
Government Association and Vice President of the Student Body. He was
instrumental in helping to shape the the historic events that occurred on May
4, 1970 at Kent State as featured in the book “Kent State: What Happened
And Why” by Pulitizer Prize winning author, James Michener.
Between law school and Kent State, Bob served as an Aide to U.S.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey in the White House during the summer &
fall of 1968, assisting in the development of urban policy, youth
empowerment programs and campaign advance political planning for the
Vice President at the time.
Bob has vast experience in school law and educational matters having
served as General Counsel to the Newark School District and as
Administrative Law Judge in the Office of Administrative Law. Bob also
served as Assistant Counsel to Governor James Florio for Education and
Administrative Law issues and helped the Governor shape his response to
the Abbott vs. Burke ruling in 1991 which resulted in the Governor
increasing school funding to urban schools to $500 million do...Expand for more

also experienced in complex litigation, both civil and criminal, and appellate
litigation. He is a member of the Bars of the State of Michigan and New
Jersey, the U.S. Supreme Court, The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the
3rd and 6th Circuits. Bob has been counsel in over 100 plus published court
opinions that have helped shape and change the law in NJ and in the nation.
Bob participated as counsel representing amicus parties and parties in the
landmark Robinson v. Cahill and Abbott v. Burke, NJ school finance cases
that established that urban children are entitled to the same quality education
as their suburban counterparts –and he was the only minority lawyer
involved in that case for a long time in the early stages.

• One of the Founders of the Black United Fund of New Jersey, Inc., (now
known as the African American Fund of NJ) New Jersey’s leading black
philanthropic organization; A leading advocate nationally regarding the
need for more diversity in the legal profession serving on numerous
committees of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar
Association, the Michigan State Bar Association, the Essex County Bar
Association of Newark, New Jersey, the National Conference of Black
Lawyers, the Garden State Bar Association, and the National Bar
Association;
• Former National Chairman of the National Black American Law
Students Association (aka BALSA) while at The University of
Michigan Law School;
• Bob is married to the Marsha Pickett. Marsha teaches art at Science High
School in Newark. They have two daughters – Sara Elisabeth Pickett, a
model and actress and a graduate of Wesleyan University in 2005; and
Samantha Taylor Pickett, Esq., an attorney and producer/film executive
with Universal Pictures / Focus Features in Los Angeles, California, and
graduate of Cornell University and Rutgers Law School where she served
on the Law Review;
THE SHOW -- WBLS-FM NYC
The OPEN LINE Show is hosted by Bob Slade and Bob
Pickett. The hosts have been on the air nearly 20 years. Open Line is a
"live" call-in talk show (2 hours) which airs on Sunday mornings
beginning at 8 a.m. to 10 noon on 50 thousand watt WBLS-107.5FM,
on the FM dial, reaching the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut
markets. WBLS-FM is the number one radio station in the urban / R&B
format in the New York market with a listening audience of 2 million
listeners. The Open Line Show has been called by numerous leaders
and journalists as “One of the most important talk shows in America. . .
Its impact is enormous” and ranked by Talkers Magazine as one of the
top 100 Talk Shows in America. Open Line is the most listened to talk
show in the tri-state area with a 12+ share in its time slot. Open Line
has won the 1998 & 2002 New York Metro A.I.R. Award for the “Best
Public Affairs Show” in the New York Market.
