Robert's Story
I was born in Opportunity in a house on the corner of Sprague and N. Pine. My Mother was born on 12th, the property the Purcell family bought from my grandfather Jim Dowling. Grampa Jim and my great aunt spent their whole lives in Opportunity. The big house between the town hall and the Dentist was theirs.
Aloha from Honolulu!! to those of you who might remember me, the skinny kid with the big feet. Our family lived at S. 500 Pine. My best friends were Steve Miller and Billy Bain. I can't remember Jimmy's last name, he lived on Evergreen, his parents were chicken farmers, was another great friend. I still love Lola Sheen since she was the Queen and I was the King in Neal Prescott's sixth grade class play at Opportunity Grade School.
It's only fair to admit I also loved Linda Bennett, both of the McNeely twins at different times of course, but Charlene the best. And Karen Barden, Janet Christian, Judy Miller and Sandra Anderson.
Has time blotted out the memories of the adventures we had enjoying what was in the old military warehouse beside the RR tracks?
My step father was in the Navy and we moved to California in the middle of my Junior year at Central Valley. We quickly moved again and I graduated at Astoria, Oregon Class of 1957, where I played Varsity Basketball and ran both the 880 and the Mile at track meets. I was best at the longer distances though and Astoria introduced me to cross-country running, at which I was pretty good.

and stayed 12 years. I obtained a BS from the University of Wisconson at Madison without ever setting foot on the campus, with a Navy Program's aid.
I was very fortunate to get into the Electrician's Union after leaving the Service and at the age of 40 moved back to Washington to raise my two children. Until 1995 I lived in Bellingham which I consider paradise.
My divorce in 1991 was a disaster. I am still licking my wounds. In 1995 I retired from the IBEW and withdrew the next year. For the past 10 years or so I have been a foreman in the Engineering Department of a fully automated Bakery, Hawaii's largest. I intend to work for the rest of my life
because I think working is good for you. A job that is interesting keeps you on your toes, makes you stick to a schedule, and makes you feel useful. You get none of that from retirement, at least I didn't, and I'm going to keep working as long as I feel productive.
Did I hear someone say "Long winded old goat?" I'm only 70 and yes, I am a Capricorn, thank you for asking.
A few years have gone by since I first joined this website in search of information about a 50th class reunion. If there was one, I could find no information on it and was disappointed to find no traces of people I remembered. What happened to everybody? So much time has gone by since those happy times I remember growing up. The world is so different now...and so is Opportunity. It is definetely true that those steep roads you recall are sort of flat today.
I'd love to hear from anybody who remembers me. Bob Quammen
