Robert's Story
Life
I am really enjoying this year so far. In July my family and I (wife, daughters, son-in-law and grand kids) went on a cruise to the Bahamas. My wife and I liked it so
I surprised her and said I made reservations for a cruise in January for just two of us. I am an old romantic at heart. One of my daughters who lives here in Florida got us all together for a cruise to Alaska next July. Should be quite a large group going. We just got back from New York where we attended my niece's wedding. We all had a great time.
Workplace
I have been retired now since 1991. After putting in about 37 years at McGraw-Hill mostly in the communications area, I left there for JC Penney. I had a little over 10 years in their security department which I really loved. From there I went to the Ridgewood Savings Bank in Lindenhurst which was located about half a mile from my home in Lindenhurst. I left there after a little more than two years because I moved here to Orlando. If I had not moved I most assuredly would still be working th
ere. They treated their employees very well. I correspond with some of the people there often.
After High School I could not attend college due to financial circumstances at home. At the time it was more important to go to work than to continue my education. I sometimes wonder if circumstances were different where I would have wound up. But everything aside I have a great
lifetime partner and two wonderful daughters. Also two great grandk...Expand for more
ids who live down here in Orlando and who I get to see much more often then if I still lived on Long
Island. I am emjoying my life here very much.
Military
When I was drafted n 1953 I was sent to Indiantown Gap in
Pennsylvania. Sixteen weeks later I was on a ship and was
sent to the Far East. In Japan I was sent to radio school at a place called Ita Jima. It was where the Japanese had their equivalent of our Annapolis. After about 5 months there I was on a ship going over to Korea. I thank the Good Lord that the truce talks had started while I was at the school. Although things were a bit unsteady the fighting had ceased.I spent a lot of time living in a tent with other guys in the 7th Signal Company. I met some of my buddies there who are still in contact with me.
Retirement
After retirement and living in Lindenhurst for 43 years my wife and I packed it up and with our dog Honey, moved here to where we now live. We have been here for a little more than 2 years. I found it strange at times. I didn't miss the snow and bitter cold weather but Christmas was so different here. I missed the different seasons which so of blend together here. It does get cooler here at time in the winter. A few times it dipped to about 40 degrees. I loved it. Right now we live in an apartment and really love it. We hope to buy a small house with a back yard. The dog will have running room and I can plant my garden which I miss a great deal. We really love living here in Orlando.
