Robert's Story

Thanks for viewing my story! After HS, I attended UC Berkeley, majoring in Computer Science. I remained in the SF Bay Area for another 16 years, where I worked for a number of high tech companies, two of the most notable being Silicon Graphics (SGI) and Cooper (the first interaction design consultancy, whose practice I helped build with Alan Cooper). In 1999, I married my lovely wife, Julie, who is an accomplished cellist, scientist, and physician (in roughly that chronological order). I'm also thrilled to announce that our first son, Max, was born on Feb. 28, 2006, and my second son, Alex, was born on Feb. 19th, 2008! After living 20 years in the San Francisco Bay Area working first as a writer and then as a digital product / interaction designer and consultant, I returned to the east coast (Brookline, MA) for 4 1/2 years, working in the Boston area as Manager of User Experience for Bose Corporation. I was in charge of a team of 25 user researchers, user interface designers, and technical writers defining the user experience and user documentation for most of Bose's product lines. In October 2007, my family and I relocated to the Seattle area (Mercer Island, WA), where I returned to the design consulting world, taking a position as an Associate Creative Director at Frog Design's Seattle studio. In 2009, my family and I once again returned to the Boston area (Newton, MA), where I first worked as a principal us...Expand for more
er experience designer at Sonos, Inc., makers of a rather remarkable line of wireless multi-room smart speakers. The first Sonos Controller for iPad app (for which I led the design) went live in 2010, and was briefly the #2 free iPad app in Apple's app store. I also designed controller apps for Android, PC, and Mac. Following my 4 year stint Sonos, I switched to healthcare, where I worked first for PatientsLikeMe, one of the first social networking sites, and the first one dedicated to helping patients with chronic illnesses share and track information about their symptoms and medications with others suffering from like illnesses. In 2017, I moved to my current job at Athenahealth, where I am currently a Director of User Experience for their web-based Revenue Cycle Management application for medical practices, AthenaCollector. I also (in 2008) concluded a 2.5 year tenure as the first President of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA), a global organization I helped create in 2005 (now with over 120,000 members worldwide) for professionals in interaction design, a discipline that I helped define in my 2004 book, About Face 2.0 (co-authored with Alan Cooper). The latest and 4th edition went on sale in 2014 on Amazon, and is also available in bookstores near you! I enjoyed seeing everyone at the 25th reunion... looking forward to the 40th, and I hope everyone remains safe and healthy during the COVID pandemic.
