Robert's Story

Some landmarks after Grant '64 = + 1964 - 68 at L & C College, B.A. History. Active in Irvington Community Association, which was educational in itself. Planned on a career in journalism. Check YouTube for some of my May 1968 Oregon Primary Election reports. + 1968 - 71 in U.S. Army. Was assigned to Berlin Brigade, first in Transportation Corps (Rail Transportation Office) and then in a G-2 Division Special Project [declassified by Germany in 2011 but still classified by U.S. in 2014]. Left home after New Year's Day in 1969, returned home after Labor Day 1971, used all my leave time to tour Europe, thinking that at any day I would get orders to go home on the way to Vietnam. See more at my website, best found by searching Google for "Berlin 1969" - that's the name of the site. + 1971 - 76 with Oregon D.O.T. transportation research and planning in Salem, interrupted by work with Gray Line of Portland, Oregon P.U.C., Coach Travel Bureau of SF, Oregon Journal.Sports during turmoil at D.O.T. The 1973 OPUC report for Portland was the start of planning which led to Tri-Met light rail. + 1972 married Sylvia (nee Fillion) in her home town, Edmonton, Alberta. + Our son, Stephen, born 1975. + 1976 - 85 emigrated to Canada where I worked for City of Edmonton and Edmonton Public Schools, including the first modern Light Rail project, opened in 1978 and the first rail Proof of Payment fare collect...Expand for more
ion system in North America in 1980. + 1985 - present with Regional Transportation District as a service planner in Denver. Worked on getting Light Rail approved and set up in this region. Teaching junior staff members how to schedule rail lines, complex bus networks. Thousands of e-mails later.... + 2003 hope and disappointment in this year as our son graduates from DU Law School and Sylvia and I are divorced. Our son is an attorney in Denver. + 2002 and later, reunion trips back to Berlin. Work on history projects, do research, meet with transportation planning people, learn latest ideas and methods, eat good food, improve my German. Fun and research traveling to the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, France, Austria, Czechia. + 2010 I have a daughter-in-law. She's smart, good with languages, and good with kids. + 2011 I have a grandson! Of course, he's wonderful and fun to talk with. + 2013 I have a second grandson, who is learning from his older brother. + 2014 I retired from RTD. It was the right time after finishing two once-in-a-lifetime projects (one in 2013 and one in 2014) and with a gap before the next to let the bright, young staff get up to speed. See 2002 for what happened next. + 2019 I sold my condo and moved into Independent Living near DU. I'm still working on my history website and participate in the "Amtrak Unlimited" blog and other transport advocacy activities.
