Entered The University of Alabama, fulling expecting to fail. I didn't. I majored in Broadcast and Film Communication and graduated in 1979. In 1977, I began working at University of Alabama Television (now called The University of Alabama Center for Public Television and Radio). It was the best job ever! I learned much more than I ever did in regular classes. I climbed my way up from production assistant, to videotape editor, to director and finally to producer. Made some really good friends along the way. ...Expand for more
By 1982, I wanted to try working in commercial TV. I got hired at WBRC-TV in Birmingham. This was another good learning experience, working for the show "PM Magazine." The folks there taught me how to write for news features on TV. Unfortunately "PM" got cancelled and I then had a few hard knocks at another gig at WBRC. 1984 - After visiting Los Angeles in Nov. 1983, I took the plunge and moved here in Feb. 1984. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, leaving family and friends in Alabama. The first years were extremely hard - I wasn't prepared for the tough competition in the big city, nor the high cost of living. I practically lived off of Campbell's soup and Morton's chicken pot pies. In 1985, I made a major decision: I wanted to become a teacher. That meant more schooling to get my credential. It was a good decision though and has paid off. Teaching has been a challenge, but it is worthwhile. I also continued producing videos and television on the side. In 1999, I took a detour and worked in educational television at KLCS-TV. I later returned to teaching, but also created Lucky Cat Productions and produced a series for kids called "Math Park." Professional dreams came true when I won three Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards for: Hollywood Homeroom (2001 at KLCS) and Math Park (2011 & 2012).".
