Robert's Story

Life After working at Quincy Hospital for 32+ years, I took early retirement so my wife (Dorothy [Brundle], QHS 1954) and I could relocate to central Florida. We now reside in Auburndale (about halfway between Orlando and Tampa)in an adult community. I attended Polk Community College and graduated in Dec. 1997 with an A.S. degree in Computer Programs Systems Analysis (4.0 GPA). We're both still working full time and are also building a business of our own in network marketing with a nutritional supplement that has done wonders for our health. It's been a few years since entering the above information. I am still on a nutritional supplements regime which has had a very good effect on me health-wise. On a deeply personal basis I had a very tragic loss earlier this year. In May 2008 my dear wife of 40+ years, Dorothy, died suddenly, unexpectedly. Her loss has been devestating for me, it was my worst nightmare come true. I continue to work (down to three nights a week now) and maintain my home, including taking good care of Dot's African Grey Parrot, Isaac. As I told my step-kids this is the first time in my 70 years of life that I am completely on my own and I'm not doing badly. I now do it all - cooking, laundry, housekeeping. I was not unfamiliar with any of these since I'd help out doing all of them during our life together. Unfortunately my loss of Dot wasn't the only tragedy in the past 18 months. Back in August 2007 we lost our oldest boy...Expand for more
, Brian Melanson, to a sudden heart attack at age 48. It was the same thing that would take his mother nine months later. Earlier this year my brother's wife died after a long battle with cancer. One of my two best friends since childhood also died this year (he stood up for me as witness when Dot and I married)and my cousin's husband (ex) died too. And last, my baby, a cockatiel named Cuddles, also died suddenly early this year. March 2014 - Been a few years since last edit. Had to retire (again) in Jan 2009 from City of Lakeland after 10+ years. Worked as overnight security at The Lakeland Center, complex of arena, theater, exhibition/meeting rooms. Forced to retire because of knee and ankle problems growing worse. Arthritis has really taken over my body and weather changes really exasperate it. Get around using a walker but recently have tended to just stay in other than going over to clubhouse occasionally for bingo or a dinner. I mentioned my parrot Isaac above, would you believe that in Sept. 2010 discovered he was a she when I found an egg in her cage. She was 17 years old! lol Had to make very difficult decision about her recently. Because it was becoming more difficult to care for her, found her a new home. My stepson Jim and I brought her there (Tampa) two weeks ago. Left big hole in heart, didn't realize how much a part of my life she had become. The loneliness is crushing. I suppose I'll survive, but that's not living.
