Robert's Story

When I was a lot younger, there were long summer days in Westfield when I would get up early to go fishing in Gregory's Pond on Woodmere Drive. Sometimes it would rain steady on a windless day, but I was dry and very content beneath that willow tree. Before I would leave, I'd skip a few rocks across to the other side towards the Reynolds house, near the well. In winter, I could not wait to get home from school to go skating on the pond. Laughing, racing, trying out ideas like cycling on ice, building an ice sled with sails and having friends there to share it all. Under a cold and starlit sky, we would go until late into the evening. It was magical. They were a lot of good times, like in the spring, lying there on the grass on the front lawn, looking at the deep blue sky and the puffy white clouds passing slowly over me. I would stare at the tree tops swaying in the breeze and could smell the new flowers in the flower bed. The grass smelled great too. At night we would catch lightning bugs. Late at night I would be lulled into a dream state, listening to the crickets outside my bedroom window. I knew these times and experiences were profoundly good, even back then. And strangely enough, I knew that I would remember them. I loved living in Westfield and deeply miss those days. Wish I had a time machine because I would unplug it when I arrived. I miss those I knew; Doreen Roberts, Bill Tice, Doug Hacket, Susan Reynolds, Brad Garabrant, Maureen Fitzgerald, Eric Branton, Reinhart Struzyna, my cousin Richard Rann and many others. My hope is to find them again or have them find me. Times change though, people move on, neighborhoods morph, lives become filled, new adventures come along and the next thing you know, you are 60ish and full of memories. What happened? Well ..., I'll have to get back to you on that because am still trying to figure that out . . . Although I did not graduate from Westfield Senior High because I had gone to school in Switzerland and then Elizabeth Preparatory, I did attend WSH and had a number of wonderful friends and have always felt that WSH was my school. After high school I then...Expand for more
began my journey away from Westfield. I drove to Georgia and across the southern states to California. Tried to figure things out but didn't, so spent a few years in the Air Force . . . and Army. Hard to believe, but true. Moved to Alaska, loved every grain of sand on the beaches and shrouds of snow but alas returned to California. So, except for the Alaska voyage and a little time in Mexico, I'™ve been here in sunny Southern California. Motorcycles, Triumphs and MG's, nore colleges, ex-spouse's (yes, plural), teacher, instructor, pilot, boat captain, children, RV, airplanes, gliders, hobbies, three books in the works and a strong desire to re-connect. My best friends from Westfield, Steve Kurusz (Eagle Croft), now in Medford, Oregon and Robert Buck(Clark Street), now in Waterbury, Vermont have always been in touch and have been best buddies for all these years. This is a tribute to friendship. Recently retired from the City of Long Beach(Ca), I still hold a USCG 100 ton Masters License (boat captain), have a CDL, Crane Operator's License and Playground Safety Inspector Certification. Looking to move by the first of 2013 to home in middle America and onto more adventures. Well, the more adventures have occurred. I moved to a beautiful home in a little town of Nixa, Missouri on February 28th, 2013 and went back to work on March 3rd. I Thought I had retired but didn't, because I discovered a fun job being a captain on WWll amphibians called, Ride the Ducks in Branson, Mo. This year will be my 5th year. If you come to Branson, look me up! I am captain Hawk. I am still looking to connect to those I mentioned above and others, if possible. I care very much about those I know, have known and even for those I vaguely remember. If anyone remembers Doreen Roberts - Prospect Street - I would truly love to get in touch with her as she is, sadly, the "one that got away." If there is anyone that remotely has a whisper of a memory that I may be in, I would truly love to hear from you. You are important to me . . . . . . Warmly, Rob Taylor - Westfield Woodmere Drive - 1958~1962, Prospect Street 1963 ~ 1969
