Robert's Story

"My Life In The Fast Lane By Bob Troyer My first stop on the road of life after 29 Palms was Chaffey College in Alta Loma, California. For some unknown quirk of fate, Art Stone decided to go there too. My mom owned a house in Ontario, so I offered a rented room to Art and we became housemates. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. We had a lot of fun going to Chaffey together, where I met my first wife, Mary. I took her to the "Date" festival in Indio on our first date and the rest is history. We got married and I dropped out of Chaffey for a while. I was 19 years old and just learning! Mary and I decided to get educated together and did both finish Chaffey with an AA degree each. We then went on to Cal State Long Beach where we both graduated in 1968 with BA degrees. While there, I majored in Woodworking and my instructor was Dr. Louis Quinones, formerly of 29 Palms High! I also studied Photography and had one of my photos accepted in a big show where there were 1200 entrants and 300 finalists. I have avidly pursued photography ever since. Five years into our marriage, she decided the grass was greener in another's yard, so we parted ways, but still remained friends. Her tragic end came after her 3rd husband died and she died of a broken heart and other medical complications. We had no children by choice. I started work at AMPEX corporation in Culver City, California where I met Maureen, my second wife in the series. She was a former model and we were extremely compatible. She was an oil painter artist and I learned wheel thrown pottery. We traveled all over southern California to art shows selling our wares. Maureen had 3 children but only one lived with us for a year. We moved to Hawaii in 1975 and I taught woodworking at the University of Hawaii. While teaching, I learned computers in my spare time and got a job teaching computing to other nstructors at UH. Maureen and I divorced in 1980. She lives in California now. With the advent of Computer Aided Design software, I had the opportunity to start a short career in Architectural Drawing. This eventually led to my teaching AutoCAD at three different community colleges in Honolulu, Hawaii. The excellent money I made as a part time teacher allowed us to buy a townhouse on the Waikele golf course just above Pearl Harbor. I am on the second tee and have a beautiful view of Pearl Harbor from my upstairs bedroom window. I met my third wife, Rebecca - the dancer - during the time when the "Dirty Dancing" movie came out. Rebecca and I can really cut a rug or two. She is now an accomplished Hula dancer and assistant to the Kumu(teacher) of her hula halau(group). Rebecca had 2 children by her former husband. ughter died at the age of 24, one year after our marriage. She took it really hard. Her son lives in North Carolina and is still single. Rebecca's niece married a Navy man and got stationed in Pearl Harbor. She had two children - a boy and a girl. We became very close to them and were sad to see them transferred to Chicago in June 2007. Having learned many kinds of software programs led me to a contract job for 10 years at Pearl Harbor Naval command. I had a Top Secret clearance which allowed me to see some very interesting things that go on in our government. I even tutored one of the acting Admirals at CINCPACFLT command headquarters. One exciting event that I witnessed was the filming of the movie "Pearl Harbor" at Pearl Harbor and Ford Island (where I now volunteer in computer support and photography for the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum), where the attack of December 7, 1941 took place. Another exciting event here was the 50th Anniversary of WWII. As the son of a veteran, I was able to go on a tour of Waikiki on the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier. After my government contract ended, I taught in a Hawaiian school, Hawaii Technology Institute(HTI), for job retraining. During my time teaching at HTI, I taught myself some high level Microsoft troubleshooting and received 10 different Microsoft certifications for Microsoft Office and Helpdesk configuration. That job ended and I stepped into a law firm for a 2 year stint as a Helpdesk Technician. I was able to fix the computers, but the lawyers were hopeless, so I laughed and left. I currently ride a 1300cc Sport Touring Yamaha FJR motorcycle. I have been riding off and on since 1967. I parked my 1985 MR2 Toyota 9 years ago and have ridden a motorcycle ever since. I'd much rather ride the bike than a car in the gridlocked traffic here. My current passion is learning history where it happened at Pearl Harbor. I am a volunteer at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, where the attack of December 7, 1941 took place. I volunteer in computer support and photography. The museum sponsors guests like Dick Cole, the Co-pilot of the Jimmy Doolittle raid on Tokyo. I met and photographed Dick Cole, John Doolittle(Jimmy's son) and Jonna Doolittle Hoppes(John Doolittle's daughter) who signed her book about her grandfather, Jimmy, for me. Oh yes, this is totally ironic as History was my worst subject in both high school and college. It took me three attempts to pass it with a "D"! I hope I get credit for all the extra work I'm doing now. Sorry, Oran. Since 2013, I've been raising Monarch Butterflies. As of 2019, I have raised over 3000. I also raised Gulf Fritillary and Chinese Swallowtail butterflies at my farm. Much Aloha, BobTroyer
