Robert's Story
I was fortunate to be exposed to unbelievably talented teachers, wonderful friends and given a chance to lead. Durham High School changed my life. People were honest and fair and gave one another a chance.
There were so many far more talented people than me, but I always felt supported and encouraged. We were all so lucky to be in that place at that time in history. I can still hear the voices, the clanging lockers, and the sea of sounds in the hallways. So many of us have gone forward to do great things and live full lives.
As a boy from East Durham, I would most likely have been stranded in a narrow world of poverty were it not for receiving a strong educational foundation. t UCLA in sociology, educational leadership and organizational systems theory. My career took me through teaching, being a principal and district superintendent and later to teach at UNC and Duke. I also served as Executive Director of the Research Triangle Consortium.. By 1990, I had made my way to UNCW where I became a full professor, department chair, Dean, and Vice Chancellor/Associate Provost. Shortly after my wife’ Patti’s death I retired. She was a beautiful, dynamic and thoroughly “Southern” woman.
I was so fortunate to meet Connie and we married in 2019. She is lovely, successful and thoroughly “Yankee” in every way. Connie and I now live in Chapel Hill, NC.
As we all know, time is ticking in the flowers around us and we ask ourselves, as did T S Eliot, “Was it worth it after all?” For me, the answer has been a soft and clear, yes.
