Robert's Story

College I was born (1953) and raised on Okinawa. I consider Oki my home and have many fond and loving memories. Since I was one of the few kids that stayed, I was always watching my friends leave on another rotation. Unfortunately the last few years are extremely clouded in a beautiful green "Thai Sticks" and Purple Haze”. I left Oki in the summer of 1970 just before beginning my junior year. I was escorted to the plane by 45 cal., toting CID agent who was pretty scared. Sidebar: The rumors (at least the ones I have heard) as to why I was “kicked off” the Rock are greatly exaggerated. I just did stupid things when I was you. I did man, finally got caught and very lucky that I did not kill myself. I did lose some very close friends. Anyways…I was pretty scared myself, but was happy to be alive and happy knowing I was going to be free and not stuck in some jail. It is amazing that God does have a plan! I completed HS at Missouri Military Academy. Graduated high (not loaded) in my class and received a scholarship to college. I went to Whittier College in CA. I worked my way through college as a supervisor at the Campus Inn and as a Campus Security Guard. I met my wife in college and we were married the day after graduation in June of 1977. We moved to Missouri for my wife Linda’s’ job opportunities to be a teacher. I obtained a position working for a construction firm building a nuclear plant. We moved back to California in the spring of 1979 after we determined that the teaching of “sweat hogs” was not Linda life pursuit. Plus being surrounded by a bunch of bigots and hypocrites was not the place we desired to raise children. (Sounds l...Expand for more
ike I am old and bitter but I’m not. It was/is not the environment to raise children. I did not know what real prejudice was until I moved back to the states!) Linda has been working for IBM since 1979 and is now a Senior Program Manager. I worked for 21 years for a firm that designed and manufactured most of its products for the US government. I end up in the position of New Products Introduction Manager with about twenty engineers, specialist and technician working for me. I was in charge of moving products from the prototype stage to full production. This was performed in country and overseas. The company closed down the California operations a moved it to a facility in southern Arkansas. We declined the relocation package and decided to stay in Bay Area. I now work for a Swedish Telecom firm. I started off as the NPI manager their but the product has matured and has gone into full production. They have closed down the Product Unit and moved it back to Sweden. I was retained to coordinate all the manufacturing efforts with our USA manufacturer. I now work out of my house and coordinate engineering and supply issues between the US and Sweden. I wish I could say that life has been a “bowl of cherries” but I have fought a life long battle of compulsive behavior. However I can claim victory over most of them. (Drugs, alcohol, being a work-a-holic, too name a few) I am a Conservative Christian, An America, Heterosexual, Pro-Guns, Anti-Abortion and political conservative. My wife and I are very active in our church and area prayer teams. I thank God every day for all my experiences and mostly for my roots. Okinawa is more than the Rock to me.
