Robert's Story

Life Grew up on Jefferson Avenue in the North End that we referred to as the Brightwood section. Used to walk the mile to school in the mornings to save a bus ticket that cost a dime!!!! Remember buying the strips of (10) tickets in the cafeteria for a buck? Remained in the Springfield area since graduation from high school. Actually, attended Cathedral High for freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Tech. Was married (12/61) and raised three children who are now RNs. The oldest will be 60 this year. I have 4 grandsons. lived 36 years in rural Southwick, MA until remarriage in 1998. Returned to the Southwick homestead in 2005. Spent a rewarding 34 years at Pratt & Whitney (UTC) and retired in 2002. As of 2023, I keep busy, golfing, sitting on our HOA Board, and doing event and drone photography. Never, ever bored. My wife, Carol, is now really fully retired (2011). I photo-chronicled the 2004 demolition of Technical High School and the relocation of the Alexander house from State to Elliot Street (where it was originally situated when built in the 1800s). Once or twice a year, my wife and I do a circuit ride of state capitols to complete my quest to photograph all 50. We have resumed our quest to photograph the capitols. We recently (06/2023) made a 2100 mile circuit ride that included Denver, Cheyenne, Pierre and Bismarck. ...Expand for more
The total is now at 37. The itineraries for 3 additional rides have been planned. This spring we will undertake a circuit ride to visit: St. Paul, MN; De Moines, IA:, Lincoln, NE; Springfield, IL; Indianapolis, IN; and Madison, WI. Workplace After Tech, I served an apprenticeship in Toolmaking at Gilbert & Barker in West Springfield. Attended WNEC evenings until graduation in '71. Worked at Pratt & Whitney, Mfg. and Environmental Engineering in East Rocky Hill, CT from 68-02. Retired in 2002, after 40 full-time uninterrupted years in the workforce. Fun In Retirement In my 24th year of retirement and LOVE IT! I attended STCC to study Graphic Arts - Digital Photography. Received the A.S. degree in 2011. It was nostalgic to be on the grounds where Tech Phys Ed. classes were held just over the fence on Byers Street. I produced a 33 minute video, with 50s and 60s music, of the Tech 62's 50 year reunion held at Springfield Country Club (where I caddied as a teenager). Hoped for a 60th; but, it didn't happen. Sadly, some of the organizers are gone. Now an all-class reunion is being held. One occurred in September 2023. I attended, but only encountered 2 classmates of '62. All in all, the reunion was well attended but an effort to assemble the Tech '62 alums would be nice for this annual gathering. The class of '61 had a few dozen grads there.
