Robert's Story
Parting Shots:
A somber close to an exciting summer. In April of this year (2010) I had the pleasure of meeting Jim Bender, candidate for US Senate from New Hampshire. Jim came to speak with 17 of our local boy scouts to help them complete Citizenship merit badges for which I am the local counselor.
Picnics, both public and private. My Lotus supporting his campaign in a 4th of July parade and making headlines in the NH Political Report for a British car in an Independence Day parade. Many meetings with many candidates, debates, and much of what we don't expect in a campaign.
Jim reigned in the rhetoric. He kept his message clear. He didn't waste his time, energy, or valuable contributions attacking his opponents, but instead went out and spoke honestly and from the heart.
The Lotus won Best in Class at the Northeast Exotic Car show at the Budweiser plant in Merrimack, NH and I got to kiss Miss New Hampshire as the winner. But sadly, Jim Bender had to concede his senate run last night.
So ladies and gents, 2010 has certainly seen an exciting summer. The good news in Jim conceding is that I, at age 60 this fall, will not have to go to USMC boot camp again. One of Jim's unspoken (t...Expand for more
o the public that is) promises would be to commit to spending no less than 1 full week in boot camp, training with the kids, in the dirt, on the rifle range, face to face. This was for him to get to know the names and faces of kids who he, as a US Senator, might one day authorize to be sent into combat. And I, who had suggested the idea, would be along, face to face, in the dirt with the kids, to keep Jim's 58 year old butt out of trouble.
And here I was almost looking forward to being the oldest Marine Corps recruit, and reactivation of my sgt. rank and standing.
I wonder what October will bring???
2023 - Jim lost that election in 2010 to Sen. Kelly Ayotte - also a friend of mine.
I tried to retire in 2016 and the company wouldn't let me.
In 2018 I told my VP to "stuff it" when the company shifted my entire engineering team to an utterly lame project for Verizon. I said NO, Don't like it... Fire me. Laid off a month later - Yay! Still working a few hours a week, same kind of work, focus on Duke University cellular comm projects across the campus.
Life goes on. Honorary member of one group, president of another. All in fun.
Keep working... it keeps your brain healthy.
