Robert's Story

Here is a little bit about what I have done (and so much I haven't): After graduation I went to Cerritos Community College, at that time it was called Junior College. I was disappointed because I had been accepted to UCLA and a couple of other colleges. My dad had a massive heart attack just before graduation and had been recuperating for several months in Northern Calif. When he came home he was forced into retirement and he and my mother moved to the desert for his health. My dad lived a very active life to be 91. I found I was not ready for college and dropped out of Cerritos. I spent the next year at odd jobs and finally join the Air Force. I was tested and the USAF offered to send me to college. After my last taste of college I declined. After what the USAF called basic training and tech school in the USAF I was sent to Germany for 3 ½ years. One of the great benefits was I got to travel through Europe and Northern Africa. During my time in the USAF I found how important (at least to me) a college degree would mean in a career. I began to take some classes in the USAF. I returned to the US in 1969 and drove a VW I had shipped back from Texas to Calif. I got a job at Bell and Howell Research labs in Pasadena in 1969 and work there and started back to school at Mt San Antonio Community College in late 1970. The Aerospace crunch came and I was laid off from B&H because I had gone to part-time. I moved to Orange County and transferred to Cypress Community College (CCC) I continued going to college full time and worked at various other jobs. I graduated from CCC in 1971 and transferred that summer to Cal St...Expand for more
ate Long Beach. In 1972 I graduated from CSULB in Psychology with honors and was invited to go to UCI. I entered UCI in 1973 and graduated with a Master's in Business and Public Administration in 1975. In Nov. 1975 I married my wife I had met at CSULB. For 7 years I worked in various management positions. Then in 1982 we decided that I go back to school. In 1985 I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. I had a private practice and also worked for several hospitals and did some p/t teaching. In 1999 I left private practice (due to HMO's not paying their bills) and went to work for Orange County. I have been with Orange County ever since. For the County I've worked as at County Psychologist, Service Chief I (director of a clinic) and now work as a Service Chief II. My current position is something like a supervising Business Analysis between O/C programs and Information Technology; we design and build information systems. In 1986 we had our first daughter and our second daughter in 1988. Our youngest daughter lives at home and goes to college the older daughter is on her own and works. Between my friends (some long time friends from AHS) and all of my family I don't think anyone could have anymore loving and caring people in their life. Future goals: I have a small P/T business doing commercial photography and videos for small businesses. With the economy in such chaotic shape I plan to stay working F/T for the next several years until I feel I can retire and expand my P/T business. That's about it in a nutshell. Just remember: if you look for oranges on an apple tree you will have a fruitless search.
