Robert's Story

2/20/2013 Hello, fellow Tremper alums. Amazing. it's going on 50 years since graduation. In some ways it seems like yesterday. I started working at AMC, 1 week after saying goodby (at the time it was good riddance) to Tremper. I worked in the factory until the Chrysler assembly operation was shut down in December, '88. At that point I went back to school and got a 2-year Information Technology degree from Gateway. I was such a punk and sluff-off at Tremper, it's incredible that I was able to actually keep up with going to college. Surprising how motivating necessity can be. Lo and behold though, not long after graduating from Gateway in 1990 they hired me as a Computer Lab Assistant. I worked on the Racine campus, then on the Kenosha campus in the IT department as a Local Area Network Technician. In all I was at GTC for nearly 22 years. I took early retirement in June, 2012. It was great, but after a year I took a part-time job as a Valet at Wheaton Franciscan in Racine, then took a Courier position after 1-1/2 years. Six months later I was back working full-time. I am now working as an IT technician for the City of Kenosha. I love the job and might think about retiring again somewhere just south of 70. I have a son in his 40's now (from a former marriage) - great kid. He's married with 4 kids and works for AT&T. I am now re-married to a beautiful woman, outwardly and inwardly. Her name is Cheryl and we've been married for over 39 years already. She is a singer with an incredible voice. As a soloist she sings weddings, community ev...Expand for more
ents, funerals, church outreaches, fund raisers and many other venues. She has sung the National Anthem at Miller Park (Brewer games), the Bradley Center (Bucks games), U.S.Cellular Arena (Wave soccer games) and Horlick field for Racine Raider games. We are also part of a Contemporary Christian praise and worship band. She is the lead singer, I play the drums. Funny thing - I always looked up to Tom VanCaster (remember him?) when he played the drums in HS. Watching him play was an inspiration, but I didn't get an opportunity to start playing until I was 35. Our band has played at two presidential campaign rallies, a birthday party for a former WI senator, the Summerfest grounds, State Fair Park, Racine County Fair grounds, Racine Zoo, NHRA drag racing events in Joliet and Indianapolis, many car shows, church and community outreaches. We've also pulled the band in the Racine 4th of July parade almost every year since 2004. If you still live in the area and have been to the Racine 4th parade you've seen us. We have great fun! Looking back however, I would never have pictured myself during my high school years having anything to do with Church, Christians, God or the Bible. Back then I liked my alcohol, drugs and cigarettes. It wasn't until after I turned 21 that I began to realize the toll that these things were taking on my mind and body. Today, I thank God for the saving Grace of Jesus Christ and I would not trade my relationship with him for anything this world has to offer. Thanks for reading my profile. God bless. Updated 3/6/23.
