Robert Murphy:

CLASS OF 1966
Mill valley, CA

Robert's Story

What happened to me? During my high school years, I was impressed by Alan Watts and by Mill Valley's Druid Heights. And I was active in social justice work. So I became a human rights worker - nowadays, the term is "environmental justice advocate" - for the Sierra Club. And I've stayed on the same path since the early 1970s. In 2011, the national Sierra Club presented me with an award, to recognize over forty years of service. It's a bit strange. I was never very athletic, even during my high school years, and I'm not very "outdoorsy" by Marin County standards. I wasn't really a hippie or anything like that during my younger years. Long ago, Paul Friedman (Class of 1966) introduced me to the Sierra Club. Martin Chew and others brought me into human rights work during the 1960s. I did some work for labor unions in Boston. The Sierra Club sent me to New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina. I've been a Sierra Club representative in Ethiopia and in some other places. I was in Egypt in 2012 to celebrate the first anniversary of the Arab Spring and I've made two visits to Cuba. And I've been involved with other projects. I now live in Tarpon Springs, Florida. I received a masters degree from Harvard Divinity School and a masters degree in public health from Boston University. I've been married to Helen Dalzell since the early 1980s. No children. From time to time, I get back to California. I send my love and best wishes to al...Expand for more
l. I always wanted to be a minister when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a crazy idea. As it turns out, they were part right and part wrong.. I was inspired by Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and Cesar Chavez during the 1960s. I'm inspired by Pope Francis and his work for economic justice and environmental protection. I still read Alan Watts books. How do I dress? Hey, it's the Gulf Coast of Florida. I dress like Jimmy Buffet. I share my home with two cats, which I find helpful. Lizards explore the patio and there are some pelicans who fish in my neighborhood. I'm reminded that the world doesn't exist for humans alone. Other species have their own needs and their own opinions. However, it's true that some of my best friends are human, so I've stayed active in human rights work, despite some disappointments. I'm an advocate for elder rights. Our generation will need all of the help that it can get during its senior years. I'm going to get by with the help of my friends. (Thank, you, Beatles, for some great lyrics.) Memories? I've lived in a lot of places. Looking back, I realize that we were all very fortunate to have lived in Marin County during the 1960s. Tamalpais High School was a great school with some very good teachers and some wonderful opportunities. We were blessed. Although, like many young people, we may not have appreciated our good fortune. Let us hope that future generations will enjoy some of the opportunities that we knew.
