Robert's Story
Left school in 72 joined the USAF in Feburary of 73. Went to basic training and then onto further training at Chanute AFB in Rantoul Illinois. Upon the third day there I bumped into Paul Little And Billy Davis one morning in the Dining facility. They were there learning to be aircraft electricians. I was studying Aircraft environmental systems. Departed there in June of that year and low and behold I was sent to Carswell here in Ft. Worth. Soon reconnected with the love of my life from High School, Cheri Lamb we soon married and by September of the next year were blessed with the birth of our first Stacey. I soon grew tired of working long hours and weekends on the flight line and requested retraining to Air Traffic Control.
We were sent to beautiful Biloxi Mississippi for the next 6 months then as luck would have it I was sent right back to Carswell again. I was really upset as I expected to be sent elsewhere. However this worked out great as this was where home and family was located. I stayed here until Feburary of 81 and I was forced to spend a year isolated from friends and family at Incirlik Air Base Adana Turkey. It was a tough lonely year without family but I traveled extensively all over the country. Took hundreds of photographs and immersed myself into the language and culture of the country. I learned to speak the language well enough to make myself under...Expand for more
stood, and brought many great memories and souvineers that will last a life time. I did manage a short 30 day leave from the country in June that year due to my mother having health issues .
Upon my return I was notified by Cheri in a phone call about 6 weeks later that we were expecting twins. Come just after Christmas I was notified by the Red Cross that Cheri was having difficulties and my assignment was reduced and I returned home. Cheri pretty much spent the rest of that time hospitalized until the birth of Michael and Robert.
My assignment which was supposed to have been to England got cancelled and again I found myself assigned , where else but good old Carswell again for the third time.
This was in 1982. I stayed put until 1985 and was given an opportunity at a position directly across the runway at General Dymamics. I left the military after almost 15 years and went to work in the Engineering Test Laboratory.
I spent the rest of that time up until 2012 when I retired from there which had now become Lockheed Martin. During that time I have been blessed by two grandchildren from my daughter Stacey. Two grandchildren from my youngest Robert, and two great grand children from Stacey's oldest, Melena. I have been truly blessed all these years with a loving wife a wonderful family and great health all these years I'm looking forward now to enjoying my retirement.
