Rob's Story

I moved from Seattle, WA to Hayward in 1966 and attended La Vista Jr High and then Tennyson. I joined the Air Force shortly after graduating. Was in for 8 yrs and was stationed in Colorado (where I got married), Germany and Nebraska, and was lucky enough to get into the computer field. Went into Civil Service in the computer/IT field for the Dept of the Navy in San Diego after going to school on the GI Bill for several years. Retired in Dec '05 after 31 yrs of federal service (including military). Married for 33 1/2 yrs and have 2 grown daughters. Living on the beautiful Oregon coast where I plan to drink lots of good beer, watch the whales and grow old with my wonderful wife. I was part of the Fairway Park gang in HS, and didn't attend classes much after my Junior year. I remember laying in bed until lunchtime and then hitching a ride to school so I could join the 'activities' at 'The Grove'. Then I would maybe crash one of Mr Bergloff's or Miss Green's art classes (anything but my own classes). Lots of trips to San Francisco and San Gregorio/Pescadero beaches during school hours too! I missed an entire 6 week class once. I even forgot the combination to my locker. I guess that's why I had to 'return' for a 5th year and actually ended up graduating from Hayward Adult School (with sev...Expand for more
eral others from Tennyson). I remember the Dean calling me in one day during that 5th year (Mr Raddo?) and him saying 'Why did you even bother coming back?' He 'highly suggested' the adult school option....lol. I got a lot of credits and mandatory courses in my first 2-3 years though so, amazingly, I would have been able to graduate on time if it hadn't been for P.E. class. Remember we had to dress and then be out on our "number" for roll call, and then we'd have to run a lap or do calisthenics? Well I'd take my time dressing until the roll call and exercises were done and then just go out and participate in whatever the activity was. I would be marked as absent and would end up with an 'F' on my report card. What a dumbass I was. I remember my Dad saying "How on earth do you get an 'F' in PE?' Luckily in my senior year, enough of my other classes were electives in art and ceramics, (which I didn't mind attending), and those teachers were a little more 'lenient'. I think I ended up around 2 credits short. Man, I'm lucky I even survived the era. To those of you that I might have known in Seattle, I attended Highland Terrace Elementary from 3rd grade through 6th and started at Butler for about 3 weeks, before moving to California. I lived on 2nd NW, about 2 blocks from Highland Terrace.
