Roberta's Story

Life Hey there Class of 68, Had a busy weekend but thought I'd have a cup of tea and write up something. Looks like life in a small box!! Amazing how slow a day can go and how fast life can pass. I worked at the Holiday Inn from the time I was 16 until after graduation from college - summers and holidays. Did freshman year at ISU after a summer as a VISTA volunteer working with migrant labor in Wisconsin. Got disillusioned with school and worked with the grape boycott and Cesear Chavez for a year before heading back to school but went to IU in Bloomington this time. Did 2 years in social work and then had a scholarship to National Outdoor Leadership School for a summer in New England - they asked me to stay on as staff which I truly wanted to but "duty" and the look on my Mom's face made me go back to Indiana and finish school. So, I guess I'm a social worker as well as a mom, wife, landlord, carpenter, bee keeper, care giver, foster mom and chief cook and bottle washer. After school I started working in Indy in the inner city as a caseworker and ended up directing a youth program. Got married and had a baby boy, Nathan who just turned 30. (He's a musician and writer in San Francisco.) Stayed home for a year and then became a child protection worker investigating incest cases. Got burned out and had another baby - my girl, Natalie who just turned 27 and she is married and in grad school in Vermont. My husband of 31 years, Gerry, is a carpenter so we have some fixer upper rentals and I spend weekends sometimes cleaning up renter mess...Expand for more
es and swinging a hammer. I secretly want to quit work, wear jeans and sweats and just fix up old houses with lots of architectural class but no money to get it going at this point. Maybe in retirement! I've worked in group homes, directed foster care programs, mental health consulting, etc, etc........ work never ends. Somewhere in all that mess I got my Masters in social work. Let's see - raised kids, mine and some others who where foster kids and we care for a mentally challenged adult at present. No grandkids yet but I can wait for that until my kids get closer to home. I think they will both, with their mates, get back to the midwest at some time. We have a cabin and some acres in Owen Co., Spencer, IN, that we will probably retire to some day - who knows. That was the plan but it is getting more and more work. I lost my dad 3 years ago but my Mom is still living in the same house in Dowden Acres so I get back there fairly often. My 3 sisters and I are taking Mom (86) on a riverboat cruise up the Mississippi in April from New Orleans to Memphis. I'm starting to get excited about it. Have been to Austrailia, England and Ireland visiting my husband's relatives, he's English but has lived in the US since he was 7 so doesn't have a cute accent. My kids have been those place and India, Morroco, Africa and South America. They do have wander lust! We're all certified scuba divers but I have to admit I enjoy just a relaxing snorkel over the exhausting dives. OK - who else is out there? Keep in touch when you have the time. Berta
