Roberta's Story
Life
After high school graduation (4 days after) I left for Maryland to begin training for a year of church service. I spent 2 months in training, then 2 months at NIH as a nornal control patient and then I went to the Osceola Migrant Center in Belle Glade, Florida working in the Migrant day care center until June. I returned home and entered McPherson College that fall. I majored in Home Economics Education earing a Bachelor of Science with enough credit hours in Science and Social Studies to teach these subjects through the 9th grade. I graduated witin After college graduation, before I began teaching, I decided I wanted to join the Peace Corp. I spent 2 years in Brazil in the state of Bahia. I returned to the States in June of 1965 and entered Kansas State University earning a Masters of Science in Clothing and Textiles in the Spring of 1967. I started teaching at Wyandotte High School in KCK in the fall of 1967 teaching all areas at one time or the other, of Home Economics (FACS). l taught here until Wyandotte started the Small Learning Communities. The last five years I taught in the Opportunity Center-World History and Physical Science. I retired from Wyandotte in the Spring of 2003 but told them I would substitute and have been called in the past 3 springs (2005, 2006, 2007) to do a Long Term Subsitution in the FACS area in the Hospitality community at Wyandotte. at Wyandotte the Spring of 2005 and the Spring of 2006. I like cats and have had several over the years. I enjoy traveling and have traveled with friends, and family over the years. My traveling with friends has been somewhat changed with the death in 1999 of my Mother and then in in the fall of 2005, the sudden death of my Brother. My Father also passed this past fall (2006). But my family has also increased with a grand niece-3 1/2 and a grand nephew (just 2). I also enjoy staying home and I like growing flowers and needlework activities such as knitting, crocheting, sewing and I want to get back to quilting.
UPDATE
My grand niece is now 7, will soon be 8. My grandnepher is 6 and he has 2 brothers, one that is 3 and one that has just turned 1. I have been slowed down some because of knee surgery in 2008 on both knees and hip surgery in 2009. Arthiritis and years of standing in labs on concrete floors and too many falls on slick winter sidewalks. But I am learning to work with container and raised bed gardening so I don't have to get down on the ground and find it enjoyable. This April I went back to visit my college roomate and her family. She lives in the Washington D.C. metro area and we took in the Cherry Blossoms. I have wanted to do that since I was in the 7th grade and teacher talked about them. Then we went to Willamsburg and Biltmore house in Ashville N.C. I had been to both but in the summer time. The flowers are both in the spring are beautiful.
