Roberto's Story

Life My life has been an insightful journey and the road ahead of me is going to be long. Ever since I was little I knew something was different about me. Growing up in my neighborhood was not an easy task to accomplish for a person like myself. I grew up believing you can trust everyone and people will treat you the way you treat them. Boy, I was wrong! My neighborhood has taught me many things. It has shown me that people do not think like me and people can be rather selfish. St. Isidore, my grade school, was a confusing time for me. At the time, I thought that life would be simple. I thought that being with your family, loving God, and being a good student would give me happiness. At the time, I can remember that I was not always happy. Richards, my high school was no different. I felt different and at times I felt like I didn't fit in. However, there were people who have impacted my life and helped me to realize I was someone pretty special. Looking back at my life I feel life has been telling me something, and now I know what it is. I feel that my life has been a road with bumps and obstacles I had to overcome. I had to overcome them in order to become a better and stronger person. Everyday is a new window that gives me new sight into my purpose in life. The journey I live is hard at times and fulfilling at others. But I know, in the end I will be responsbile for all my actions and this is why I want to be aware of everything I do. I need to not leave one page unturned, or leave one good deed, undone. I know one day I can look back at my life and say I gave it my all and I treated people with respect. I believe my purpose in life is to be there for people, work hard at my obligations and always strive for happiness and fulfillment. College Entering into a university setting was new for me. When I began my 1st year at Lewis University I entered into the psychology program which was great, however, I felt an itch in a different program. I realized by my second year that I wanted something different, so I entered into the political science program and established my minor as psychology. I am glad I made that decision. As a consequence, I analyze not only human behavior and human cognition; I also analyze human behavior in political and socioeconomic settings which I find to be very stimulating. Political science has lead me to investigate more into the field of international relations which I feel may be my calling in life. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business. After, I complete my Masters in Business Administration in International Business; I plan to get married take a year or two off from school. After the two years I plan to enter into a Masters program in International Relations. After I finish my MA in International Relations I hope to work in the field of international relations and pursue a Ph.D. Workplace Currently, I am developing a background in...Expand for more
international relations, education, business and law. I have worked as an ESL teacher for the LaSallian Christian Brothers in Kansas City Missouri in the summer of 2000. Starting September 2001 until present I work special events with Kurth Lampe a public relations and political advising firm in Chicago. I was able to land this position through my fraternity, Phi Kappa Theta. I work special events by setting up video and audio equipment, assisting the press for setup and assisting in preparing press releases before and after the events. I have worked with the United Nations Association of the United States, the Center for International Rehabilitation, the Better World Campaign, the Muhammad Ali Center and John Schmidt Candidate for Illinois Attorney General in 2002. Through this job I have been able to make many business contacts and meet with extraordinary people such as, Muhammad Ali, Paul McCartney, Jessie Ventura, Mayor Daley, Leah Hope and William Kennedy Smith. During the summer of 2002 I interned for my fraternity Phi Kappa Theta in Indianapolis Indiana. I was actually an intern for Phi Kappa Theta Foundation, the business aspect of the Fraternity. I assisted with fundraising by processing donations by alumni and Phi Kappa Theta affiliates. I also assisted with the coordinating of Phi Kappa Theta's Leadership Conference in Washington DC. I worked special events for Kurth Lampe and worked as a paralegal for Tobin Petkus & Munoz, Attorneys at Law in Chicago and I also worked as Graduate Assistant for International Admission at Lewis University in Romeoville Illinois. As a paralegal, I filed state and federal cases, I researched open and closed cases and I assisted during trial preparation and during trial, with organizing exhibits, developing trial notebooks and research new discoveries. As Graduate Assistant for International Admission at Lewis University, I recruited international students for undergraduate and graduate admission. I have to update new regulations from the State Department in order to comply with all regulations, including from INS. I also assist with forming partnerships with international recruiters and develop marketing strategies to improve on enrollment. My current position is promotion from grad assistant to Coordinator for Multicultural & International Admission at Lewis University. I recruit students, while developing special programs with CPS. I am also an adjunct faculty member for the foreign language department. I hope my work experience assists me to one day work as diplomat out of the United States for the United Nations or possibly the State Department. If I do not end up in governmental affairs I hope to work for a non-profit organization that supports and educates the population on international relations. After working in the field and fulfilling my purpose or call in life, I would like to work as a consultant in the fields of international relations and business, while teaching part-time at a small university.
