Robin's Story
After high school I went to college at Western Michigan University and studied geology, biology and education. I graduated in 1982 and married my husband, who had been a WMU grad student from Missouri, in the Spring of 1983. He was working in Texas for Exxon so this is where we ended up. I began as a 6th grade science teacher in Andrews, Tx for a year before we moved to Midland and then I taught at Midland High for 14 years teaching biology, geology and environmental science. For the last 12 years I have been teaching 5th grade science in the districts gifted and talented program. My husband Jim, has become an International Geologist and has for the last 14 years been consulting for an oil company in Siberia, Russia. He flies back and forth for 4 to 6 week shifts at a time.
Teaching has been a great career, but I am starting to get the kids of some of my former high school students and it is making me feel old. As a teacher
I have had some great experiences including getting to be a VIP at a spaceshuttle launch and spending 19 days at sea on a research ship in the Gulf of Mexico. Touching the lives of thousands of students has been a great experience. As times and the educational system continues to pass and change I find my enthusiasm shifting and changing too. I have started to branch out and experience new hobbies and interests. Making stained glass decorations, fly fishing and playing golf seem much more...Expand for more
pleasurable than grading papers.
In 2009 we bought a place in Cody, Wyoming in anticipation of retirement in 2013. We spend summers there now and as many holidays as possible. It has a 2 bedroom guest house which we have been able to turn into vacation rental property (vrbo.com #261562) and gives me lots of room for friends and family to visit. Sitting on the covered deck watching the river go by with the deer and rabbits that are always in the yard is an awesome way to spend a summer. My most recent Wyoming adventure was a 7 day pack trip into the wilderness area near the Yellowstone park boundary. We rode horses up into a secluded mountain meadow, camped, fished and hiked. Including a climb up to a mountain top where we could look into another valley and were able to watch a momma Grizzly and her two cubs for almost an hour. It was a great adventure and I look forward to doing more of that type of thing.
UPDATE 2015
We have retired and now live full time in Cody Wy. A truly wonderful place with tremendous opportunities to enjoy life. Fishing, four wheeling, enjoying the great outdoors like the t-shirt says "life is good".
I am active in my church and enjoy camping and traveling with my womens outdoor adventure group “Sisters on the fly”. I have been blessed to have traveled and fished in Alaska, Belize, New Zealand, Patagonia, and the Amazon . Looking forward to many more adventures in the future.
