Roche's Story
I joined the Navy in September of 1967, attended Boot Camp in San Diego, Boot Company 553. From there it was on to my first duty assignment, the USS Point Defiance, LSD-31. I did three Wes Pac Cruises, and left her in 1971 in Long Beach, CA. I re-enlisted 90 days later, and ended up in AMS "A" school in Millington, TN, then to Patrol Squadron 30 (VP-30) at Patuxentant River, MD. I got married there, to another sailor, Karen Hepner, and have remained together for 39 years and counting. Other commands have included AMS "B" School in Millington, TN, Helicopter Training Squadron 18, first at Ellison Field in Pensacola, then it was moved to Whiting Fied, in Milton FL. I attended P-3 Flight Engineer school at VP-30. then went to VP-10 in Brunswick, Maine for several years, and deployed to Rota, Spain and Lajes in the Azores. o the UK. In 1977, I was lucky enough top be punished for signing my page 13 to quit flying, and was assigned to "NDI" school at Chanute AFB, Rantoul, IL. I finished # 2 in the class, and was sent to Gyuantanamo Bay, Cuba until September of 1980, then to Kingsville, Texas where we decided that 14 years in uniform was enough. I left as a selectee for AMSC, and actually did become on for a short time while I tried out the USNR. I also got an Associate Degree from Mohegan Community College through NCFA (Navy Campus for Achievement). Since I left the Navy, I have worked strictly in Non Destructive Testing, and it has been quite an experience. I have two daughters, Vanessa, born in Guantanamo, in 1978, and Jessica born in New Orleans in 1981.
I currently live in South Bend, IN, and work for Chemetall US, as the NDT Product Manager. We manufacture and sell Penetrant and Magnetic Particle materials under the Ardrox name.
