Rocky's Story
I live in Plano, a community just north of Dallas, Texas. I am married to Linda (Higgins) Miller, whom I met when I lived in Oklahoma City. We both are graduates of U.S. Grant High School, Class of 1967. We have two children, Jason and Rachel, and four grandchildren, Abigail, Alyssa, Grayson and Liam.
I retired after spending 35-years in the high-tech industry. I now spend my time doing volunteer work, which includes teaching English in China in the summers and tutoring graduate-level students in Ancient Hebrew in the U.S. I travel when I can and enjoy the grandchildren as often as possible.
Linda recently retired from Barrow Hanley Mewhinney & Strauss, a Dallas-based Financial Management Firm; she was with the firm for 34-years. We plan to spend our future traveling and enjoying each other's company and friendship.
In the mid-1960's , I spent two years in Sherman, Texas (9th and part of the 10th grades). I still have friends from Sherman, who have endured the years and the distance and I am happy that those two years of my life produced these enduring friendships.
Before living in Sherman, I lived in southern Oklahoma in the small town of Sulphur, where I was born. I also have friends from those earlier times that I cherish.
My interests include Ancient Near Eastern Studies (including Biblical studies), Egyptology, Aviation and Music:
Ancient languages fascinate me. I spent six years after college pursuing graduate degrees in the languages of the Ancient Near East. This may seem odd to some but the benefits of such study extend to every walk of life and have added perspectives that would be missing had I not endured the late nights of study during those formative ...Expand for more
years.
In Elementary School I wrote a one paragraph essay on the pyramids of Egypt. Since that day I have been fascinated with Egyptology (though I didn't know that word until many years later). In 2005, I traveled to North Africa and spent sixteen days trekking through the Sahara from the northern border of the Sudan to the ancient city of Alexandria on the northern Mediterranean coast of Egypt, stopping along the way to see many 'wonderful things' to borrow a phrase from Howard Carter. I cruised the Nile River and climbed to Khufu's burial chamber in the Great Pyramid of Giza. These were things I had dreamed of doing for decades but could not seem to find the time to pursue.
Aviation: I dreamed of learning to fly from childhood. In 1979 I finally achieved that dream and earned a Private Pilot's License. Since then I have 'upgraded' to a Commercial Pilot's License and added 'Glider' to my ratings. It was in the pursuit of a glider rating that I truly learned to love the sky. As a hobby for a number of years, I was a flight instructor. It was a fulfilling way to give the gift of flight to others.
Music - (most kinds of music) - is a gift. I love the music of my youth - the Classics of the 1960's - but I suppose it is Jazz - the trumpet of Miles Davis, the sax of Charlie 'the Bird' Parker, and 'the ivories' of Brubeck and Monk that made the greatest impact on me.
Life has been an adventure and still holds the hope of more good things to come. If you are reading this, I probably knew you - nothing is more important than the friends we make on this journey called life. So 'cheers to you.' If you have a minute, drop me a note and say hello; I would love to hear from you.
