Rodney's Story
Memories of a time passed that help create who you are today. About two years after graduating my reality changed, when a physician at the KU Medical Center gave me 3 months to live. I told him there was a beautiful blue eyed blonde that I hadn't met yet and I had yet to marry and start a family. After 2 years of chemo, they declared my condition as 100% normal again without any relapse.
On December 4, 1976 I met the woman of my dreams, we went to dinner a couple of nights later and on Christmas day proposed, and we were married on May 7. This year we will celebrate 32 years together. In 1979 our Son was born and in 1980 our daughter was born. Dreams do come true.
In 1985 I left Safeway after 16 years and went to work for a small cable company at Ft Riley and then moved to Kansas City to work for Time Warner Communications. After completing my electronic's degree, I decided it was now time to go back to school. So, I started in Kansas city at the Junior College with 3 hour of credit. My first semester I carried 12 hours, then moved to 15, 9 hours of summer school, and then 21 hours my last semester to finish in one and a half years, all while working full time and supporting our family.
Next I decided to complete my BS, finishing one year later. One week after completing my BS, I started on my MBA at Baker University, that did take a full 2 years. Then, 2 weeks after completing my MBA I decided to next complete my MMIS (Master in Management Information Systems).
I was now working as the Director of Corporate Training for Time Warner. I ofter traveled to Denver each month as a Chairman of a scholarship...Expand for more
committee for the broadband industry, this was in 1998. A friend on the committee presented me with an offer I couldn't refuse in Denver. My wife is from Denver, when I ask her if she wanted to move back to Denver, she said, " I can be packed in 5 minutes!"
My delema was I had 12 weeks left to complete my second masters, I wasn't going to let it go, my classes we on Saturday from 8-5. So, on friday afternoon I would rent a car and drive all night back to KC, go to class through the day, and drive back to Denver on Saturday night getting in about 2-3 in the morning. It was worth it.
After about a year and a half, I went to work for KPMG consulting in their broadband division and spent several months at Microsofts offices in San Jose and Redmond. Then in 2001, everything changed with 9-11 and the crash of the tech industry.
Fortunately, I was also working in the evenings for several of the colleges in the Denver area as an adjunct professor teaching a number of business, HR, and technology classes.
After the decline of the tech industry, I moved into the medical field, where I am today.
I have started 2 successful business in the medical industry here in Denver and sold both. I am now working on another medical project that should be very interesting, it deals with information technology in the medical industry from a clinical perspective, plus a network security program. As of today, IBM and Cisco are looking at purchasing the network product.
Now, I have fond memories of many experiences in life, but find myself thinking back to times, memories, and those that helped create them.
