Rodney Fitzgibbon:

CLASS OF 1975
Columbia, SC

Rodney's Story

After high school, I went to USC and got my BS in Biology then 1 and 1/2 years of grad school and studied and researched in nuclear medicine. I then decided to go to med school. I was accepted at MUSC and USC School of med and chose to stay at USC. Right before I started med school, Martha Patterson-class of '76, introduced me to Polly Sutcliffe. We were engaged in 3 months and married 9 months later. We just celebrated our 31st anniversary on May 22nd of 2013. We have a daughter, Jennifer age 26 and a son, Jonathan, age 23. Jennifer is in accounting with Price Waterhouse with a degree from Darla Moore School of Business. Jonathan has a double major in computer science and math and due to graduate this December( thank God!) I graduated med school in 1985, 18th in a class of 55 and went to residency in family medicine at Richland Memmorial Hospital here in Columbia. In 1988,I started my own practice, NorthEast Family Practice and I just celebrated my 25th years in the same practice and still going strong. I am working on a MBA in medical management now so we will see where that takes me. Family Practice has been great as we see all aspects of medicine from cradle to seniors and both male and female issues. I still live in Forest Acres area as it is growing and families are coming back and renovating older houses. I take care of about 50 class mates from the 70's, so we have reunions all the time. My brother Tim,class of '79, is a doctor in Family Medicine too but in Dillon,SC with his wife and three children. My father, Rodney Sr, was a long time OB/GYN in Columbia and the fir...Expand for more
st in the Midlands to deliver quadruplets alive and well. I take care of those brothers too. My Dad died in 2007 of a brain tumor. I miss him dearly! My grandmother ,Lockie, is 102 now. The Titanic was still floating when she was born. Lots of history she's seen. My favorite movies are 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and 'Captains Courageous'. Fav band: Beatles(everyone else has just copied them) and single artists are George Harrison esp All Things Must Pass album/ Eric Clapton esp his Unplugged CD and Pilgrim CD. New artists locally is a band called Stagbriar/very different but great harmony. Christian artist is Cindy McKeowen from Elloree SC. She lost her 15yo daughter in 2007 but has never wavered in her faith. A book was written about her daughter called Forever Kelly. Golfing, Blue Ridge Mountain hiking, guitar playing and staying at the Inn on Biltmore are my favorite past times. Polly has her own business called Lady Street. Check it out on line. Books I like: I like the Apologetics study Bible, The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, most poetry, most medical articles, A. Lincoln by White, Icons of Evolution by J Wells , The Black Hole War by L Susskind PhD, Time Travel in Einstein's Universe by J R Gott, Darwin's Black Box by M J Behe , and the classics of course. I am finishing my two year stint as Chief of Family Medicine at Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. I am Chair of a Compensation Committee of a new multispecialty group being started between USC and Palmetto Health. Obama care has caused too many problems to count. Unfortunately, I am 10 years from retirement(at least). RF
