Roger's Story
Life
Life since GUHS has been full & interesting.
Staring military (read Vietnam!) service in the face upon U of O graduation, I tested for and was accepted to the USAF OTS & Pilot Training programs. After 18 mos training in TX and OK I started a career that included large cargo jets as well as fighter-type aircraft. I was on active duty for almost 12 yrs before I separated and started flying for the airlines. I subsequently joined the Air Natl Guard where I served for another 13 yrs in an F-4 Phantom, then later, F-15 Eagle, interceptor unit. I retired from the Guard as a Lt Col in Jan '95.
My airline career consisted mostly of Captain/Instructor/Check Airman duties on a range of aircraft from large 60 passenger turboprops to DC-8's, 707's, 727's, 757's and finally ending up in 767's which I flew for the past 3 years. I retired at age 60 in Nov '06. I've been to all parts of the world except Antarctica & Greenland. It was all very rewarding but I'm now looking forward to being the "retired dude" who restores classic Mustangs & enjoys his family and his 2 retrievers, Boo & Lola.
Mitzi & I were married in '68 after she graduated from Emanual Nursing School. We have 2 sons, Jason & Marshall, born in '70 & '75. Both sons live in the Portland OR, area and we see them often. Jason (the oldest), has been married since '95 and in July '06 he & his wife, Maria, presented us with our first grandson, Ethan Jay! In 2011 Ethan got a new little brother, Logan. Talk about happy Grandma and Grandpa!! Both of our sons graduated from University of Portland. Jason continued at PSU and earned a Masters of Public Health Care Administration. He has worked for Kaiser Permanente Health since his undergrad days & has moved steadily up the corporate ladder to where he is now the youngest Director in Kaiser's ...Expand for more
history! Marshall attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco after UP graduation. After a stint as a Management Chef at the Las Vegas Convention Center (he didn't like living there too much) he returned to the Portland area where he was one of 2 food purchasing agents for the over 800 KinderCare Centers in the US and Europe. In 2005 he switched tracks to managed health care also and is now a Buyer and Project Manager for orthopedic implantables for Legacy Health Systems in Portland. He found he truly loved the health care environment so in Jan '14 he started the first 2 years of PreMed classes at Oregon State (finished in 1 yr and a summer term.) and is currently a Junior in the RN Program at U of Portland!
Like I wrote at the start of this bio, life since Gresham High has been full and interesting. In the Air Force I flew all kinds of missions all over the world and hauled everything from military vehicles, grunts, paratroops, household goods, general cargo, ammunition, 50 ton Minuteman ICBM's, and other nuclear weapons. I also brought back the caskets bearing the young KIA's from Vietnam as well as literally thousands of South Vietnamese refuges at the close of the war....and later some of the returning POW's from the Hanoi Hilton.
In civilian life I carried passengers, cargo, & overnight parcels as well as monkeys, (they're really nasty!), thoroughbred race horses, cattle, baby chicks, pallets of fresh-caught salmon, and containers of live Nova Scotia lobster destined for fine restaraunts in Japan and Asia.
All in all it was an interesting career for a guy who was going to be an Architect........and it sure beat working for a living!
We've lived in Vancouver, WA, since we moved back here from Hawaii in '85. We're in the book so please call us. We'd love to hear from you.
