Roger's Story

Life After graduating from Cedarbrae Collegiate in 1964 I apprenticed as a Tool & Die Maker (T&D) in Scarborough. I married in 1966 and had one daughter, Chantelle, born in 1968. My wife and I divorced amicably in 1972 as she found I was always too busy working to be with her. We still maintain contact through our daughter. In 1969 we had moved to Peterborough where I worked for a specialty manufacturing company for about 20 years. I moved from Tool & Die maing to a supervisory role and ended up in the Human Resources (H.R.) department specializing in Occupational Health & Safety (O.H. & S.). In 1996 I left FGL and started my own business offering a variety of H.R. services. I worked as an O.H. & S. Consultant teaching a variety of subjects and completing a variety of projects for different companies. One of the most interesting was compiling an inventory of confined spaces in two provincial super jails. I cannot recommend either as a place to live. I remarried in 1972 and my wife and I have had two children, Stephen and Juliet. We are still married 35 years later. In 2003 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer with a tumour in the humerous bone of my left arm. It ate a big chunk out of the bone which caused my are to literally fall apart. The cancer has been treated, the arm bolted back together, but the bone itself wouldn't heal and continued to be extremely painful. Consequently, a ...Expand for more
second surgery was accomplished in December of 2005 where 7" of bone was taken from my leg and used to replace the bone in my arm. It was patched with bone chips and marrow from my hip and then another piece of titanium and ten screws hold the whole thing together. It is a credit to the surgical team at Mount Sinai Hospital that I now have a functioning arm. It is still quite painful and movement is slightly limited, but I have an arm. To me the biggest kicker was that I was forced to sell my business. Not having worked for two years at the time, the business was slowly declining. My 25% business partner was having a difficult time without me and she had always said that she wished to retire in July of 2005. Consequently, we sold it to the employees. It is ironic that illness should force me to lose the business in which I ensured I would have the majority of control so that I couldn't be forced out and could contine to work as I wanted beyond age 65. My wife and I live just North of Peterborough in the hamlet of Bridgenorth. My ongoing hobby is a 1978 MG MGB. I have a metal lathe, vertical mill, surface grinder and a variety of other equipment typical of a small machine shop. It keeps me occupied. 2008 looks like the year in which I should be able to start functioning more normally again. I am considering providing custom machining services, especially to those with cars needing parts modified or made.
