Roger's Story

After graduating from North in 1959, that summer I got a job as a trainee at First-City National Bank. I quit in August of 1960 to go to college. I went to Harpur College, which later became SUNY-Binghamton and is now Binghamton University. I finished my studies in October 1964 (Harpur was then on a trimester system), but officially received my degree in June 1965. In June 1964 I was married to my first and only wife, Nancy L. Sipel of Endwell, N.Y., a 1963 graduate of Maine-Endwell. I began graduate studies in history at SUNY-Binghamton in November 1964, but broke them off in the summer of 1965 when Nancy and I went to England, where I took a job teaching English and history at University School in Southport. In April 1966 I joined the U.S. Army, enlisting for Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., from which I graduated in early 1967 as a second lieutenant. Upon completing my military service, in March 1969 I went to Pennsylvania State University to earn a master's degree in journalism, which was granted in March 1970. After that I spent nearly all of my working life at a number of newspapers, most notably and for the longest period of time for the Milwaukee Journal, where I held various positions, including that of b...Expand for more
ook-review editor. Nancy and I are both retired, living in Menomonee Falls, Wis. We have three grown children and eight grandchildren in various stages of growth.. I have written and published seven books, including "The Chenango Kid: A Memoir of the Fifties," about growing up in Binghamton (particularly the North Side). The remaining six are novels, "Invisible Hero," "Dragon in Amber," and "The Lost World: A Sentimental Journey," which was published in 2013 and is set in the 1950s in a city much like Binghamton; I describe it as a cross between chick lit, a Young Adult novel, and mainstream fiction. "The Flight of Alice Blue Gown" was published in 2014; it is about the emotional and physical abuse of a high school girl in the late 1950s. In 2015 I published a Young Adult novel titled "The Case of the Kid from Calais: A Connie & Connor Crime Story," set in 1954 in a city called Billington that bears a remarkable resemblance to Binghamton. My latest book, published in 2019, is a rewrite of James Fenimore Cooper's 1828 sea novel, "The Red Rover," which I titled "The Red Rover: Wrenched into Contemporary English from the James Fenimore Cooper Original, Mercifully Shortened, Agreeably Rearranged, and Otherwise Improved by Roger K. Miller."
