Roger's Story

Before graduating high school I was enlisted in the U.S. Navy. I attended Boot Camp in San Diego, and my first duty station was in Da Nang RVN where I spent a year. The Navy transferred me to Bermuda where I met my Wife (Donna McCaffery) from Hartford CT. We are still married. We moved to Pensacola FL so I could attend Photographers and Photojournalism Schools. We then were stationed in Orlando FL, where we had our first Child (Kathryn Elizabeth). Transferring once again, this time to Indian Head MD where I attend the Naval School of Explosive Ordnance Disposal/ Diving/ Chemical Warfare. Upon completion of EOD School I was stationed at Fort Story VA. While at Fort Story a lot of things happened, I sailed on one ship, performed many operations around the world, attended advanced Navy Diving School, and my wife and I had a son (Christopher Allen). We were uprooted one more time to Newport RI where at the Detachment most of our time was spent in the support of the U.S. Secret Service during the 1980 campaign. We were on protection duty for all the candidates and their wives throughout New England. After spending a wonderful four years in RI our family was sent back to VA where I was once again riding ships, providing protection support, and continued to perform many operations. While at my command in VA I was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer and had to transfer to a new command about two miles away. I assumed the duties as the Groups Diving Officer. I finally retired from the Navy after giving them twenty two years. After retiring from the Navy I worked on a few different jobs until I received an ...Expand for more
invitation to work overseas. I went to Kuwait after the Gulf War to assist in the cleanup operation of the American Sector. While in country, our mission was to find and explosively dispose of any and all munitions found. This position lasted 18 months. I was allowed to go home three times where my family and I took some really nice trips to other countries. After that I continued to work for various contractors around the world working with explosives, hazardous waste, and safety. My wife finally grew tired of me constantly being away and asked that I find a job near home. I was hired onto the Federal Government as a Hazardous Waste Technician where I worked for a few years until I was appointed to be an Occupational Health and Safety Technician. I wasn¿t in that position very long before my current position came available. I am now working for the Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration as a Transportation Security Manager/ Bomb Appraisal Officer. I am working at the Norfolk International Airport teaching the Transportation Security Officers how to locate harmful devices that are not allowed on the aircraft. In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis. I was on a 3.5 rated team that placed number two in the world. My wife and I enjoy traveling to different countries, the last trip was a cruise around the Mediterranean where we had port calls in Rome, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Palma de Majorca Spain , Tunisia, Sicily, and Naples Italy. Our next trip is with a bunch of friends to Jamaica. Our children are grown and gone and we are looking forward to being Grand Parents.
