Roger's Story

Life After graduation, I went to UCONN to play football...not to get an education...wrong reason!!! I broke my wrist that summer playing basketball and for the first time in a long time didn't play football that fall and I wasn't ready for college so I played basketball, cards, and other survival games at UCONN. I pledged "SAE" and was passing all my subjects A-A-B-B-C when "The Spirits" in me convinced me to go home with 4 weeks to go in the semester and quit college. The Army drafted me pretty soon thereafter (we all remember the "draft") and after basic training at Fort Dix, NJ and an additional 16 weeks of training in Virginia and 3 months more advanced training in Atlanta, I vacationed in sunny Pleiku, South Vietnam (near the Cambodian border) for a year of fun and frolic in those Central Highlands. I was sent to Vietnam on July 4 1968 and I came home exactly one year later on July 4, 1969. I got married and we moved to Augusta, and they can't get me to leave even though I am still referred to as a Damn Yankee (I've been here almost 50 years)! I graduated from Augusta College with honors and became a Certified Public Accountant and had my own CPA tax firm (20+ years) until I retired (disability) in 1993. I have been divorced for over 20 years...I have 5 children and 16 grandchildren. They have all li...Expand for more
ved near me in the Augusta area.. I shared a house with my daughter and her husband and four girls ages 19, 12, 9, 4 for 20 years and they all recently bought a new house and moved 8 miles away. My 19 year old granddaughter still lives here. I have been the sole employee/owner of Granddaddy Day Care for 19 years. Life is great! I am getting married in January 2019. Even with the ups and downs of these past 53 years since Stamford High School, life couldn't be better now if I scripted it!!! God works in mysterious ways...God has indeed blessed me! Military I did my basic training at Fort Dix, NJ and went to 16 weeks of schooling in Ft. Lee, Virginia (Petersburg) and got out of the schools as an E-5. Received further training at Atlanta Army Depot and then went straight to Pleiku, South Vietnam arriving at Camp Holloway and eventually to a new outpost in early August 1968. Any of you guys that were at the new outpost (88th S&S Battalion) in August 1968 when the motor pool got blown up, please email me, I have an interesting "For Official Use Only" momento you may like to have concerning those "fireworks" on August 23, 1968. I left Vietnam on July 4, 1969 and was stationed at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Ga until my honorable discharge in June of 1970 to attend Augusta College on the GI Bill.
