Roger's Story

Hello Fellow Classmates! As I sit here looking through the “Clairtonian Class of ‘57,” I have this rush of great memories that go back to 1st and 2nd grades at St. Joseph’s, 3rd-6th at Miller Ave. and, of course, 7th-12th at Clairton High School. Sadly, as we are in our golden years, we are losing so many of our friends and classmates. As I look at the senior photos, I can remember so many of these faces in elementary school as if it were yesterday. While at St. Joseph’s, at age six, Roger Runatz and I got into a lot of trouble when we squeezed through the perimeter chain link fence and left the school grounds at recess and no one could find us. Also in second grade, I remember Judy Nebesnick helping me with my arithmetic. I must of been a bad dude in Catholic school because I remember being disciplined many times by the Nuns. At Miller Ave., I remember Dick Frost, Joe Jenco, Toni Hrabosky and JoAnn Leasure just to name a few. So here’s my life’s story in a nut shell: After high school, I joined the Army to take advantage of the GI Bill to pay for my education. I was trained in military mapping and was assigned to the U.S. Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir ...Expand for more
Virginia as a Mapping Instructor. After completing my military service, I was employed at the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington, DC as a Cartographic Technician compiling military maps and attended George Washington University majoring in Cartography. As a civilian employee of the Defense Department, I volunteered for an assignment as a Consultant and Mapping Advisor to the US Army 20th Engineer Brigade, 66th Engineer Company in Vietnam. Upon my return from Vietnam, I was promoted to Supervisor of a Map Compilation Unit at the Defense Mapping Agency. After 7 years with the Defense Department, I accepted a position as a Nautical Cartographer with the Department of Commerce , National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). After 26 years of compiling and editing nautical charts for the U.S.Navy, Coast Guard and commercial shipping, I retired in 1994 with 36 years in the Federal government which included my military time. It’s been 29 years since I retired and I’ve been blessed with a fantastic wife, 5 children, 2 grandchildren and good health. In retirement, my wife and I enjoy traveling.. I’m enjoying life and thanks for the memories. Roger Durosko
