Roger's Story
Class mates, a lot has happened since high school in 1955, and as many of us say; if I had a chance to do something different well¿..if I have hurt anybody I would ask for forgiveness¿.there is a short verse I try to live by¿.I love the sound of kindly words- I try to make them sing, and hope I never send one out to be a hurtful thing.
I can dream but the good Lord made me as I am, quiet introverted but that was me, I was born in England wound up in Africa Egypt and Ethiopia, until after the War (WWII) with Germany was over then back to England until 1947, when my aunt in Willoughby Ohio sponsored us to come to the United States. Grade school was Browning elementary and finally high school. As you know we all had our different school friends and groups, but it is always nice when we go to our high school reunions and check each other out, you look and try to recognize but¿.in high school I don¿t think I was the smartest but I passed. Played football for a couple of year¿s glee club and ECT Had a few girl friends and you know who you are! My high most memorial moment in High School was when I became an American Citizen in 1953; I was so proud and allowed me to enlist in the Navy after school¿.during school I worked as an apprentice butcher then graduation. This is when my life started to change I enlisted in the Navy along with Bill Dort, boy did I grow up fast, I was sent to California for schooling in intra communications (electronics) gyro and so forth, then requested submarine duty in New London Connecticut, after scho...Expand for more
ol was assigned to a sub, then I really grew up I wasn¿t so introverted, as some of you remember me in school I weighed 147 pounds my average weight in service was 185 so I got fed. The rest of my enlistment was on submarines ¿Diesel boats¿ I got out of the Navy in late 1960 went back to my old job (Butcher) met my first wife Valerie from Willoughby, reenlisted back in the Navy back to submarines then in 1961 was selected to go to Nuclear school in New London Conn. The school was the equivalent of two years of collage managed to pass that when our first child was born ¿Bonnie¿ transferred to proto type and further schooling on reactors and core construction for nuclear submarines,
And then I was finally in nuclear submarines and the cold war. During the rest of my tour, had two more children, Maureen and Roger After 20 years of service to our country I retired from the Navy, Worked with two companies before I wound up as an instrument tech for Amoco Chemicals in Mt Pleasant South Carolina. After 21 years of marriage Valerie decided she wanted to be single and left and I finished raising the kids, but this has a happy ending I met a lady named Sheila and I know the good Lord had his hand in it and we are coming up on our 25th year.
Yes I have done a lot of growing up, been tested by life itself, been hurt and was very bitter but when everything seems lost, hold up your hand and ask for help ¿I Did¿ and now between our two families 9 kids 10 grand¿s, life is good¿
