Roger's Story

Classmates, for the reunion invitation email me "rwhitman97" to the left of the ampersand and "verizon.net" to the right of the ampersand. I thank God for giving me a wonderful wife, two outstanding children, and years of employment that allowed me to retire with a secure financial future. Since I was born with some minor disabilities, I could never assume it would turn out this way. From September 1957 to June 1961 I was a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During this time I was in Army ROTC. In June 1961 I received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and was commissioned a 2d Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve. I served on active duty for 11 years as an Army officer, with overseas tours in South Korea, West Germany, and South Vietnam, and two stateside tours at Fort Ord, California. I then worked 29 years as a civilian employee of the USAF as a contracting specialist, at Norton AFB, San Bernardino, California, and March Air Reserve Base, near Riverside, California. I met my wife, Theora, during the time I was stationed in Germany. She was a teacher in Department of Defense Dependent Schools. The wedding was in her home town in Iowa, but we have lived in California ever since. We have two children. Our son Randall graduated from MIT in 1994 and is employed by Esri in Redlands, California, as a computer software specialist. His wife was born and raised in Peru. They have two daughters. We see them often since they live near us in Redlands, California. Our daughter Michelle graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, her mother's alma mater. She married a graduate of the US Air Force Academy who has completed 20 years of active duty as an officer in the USAF and retired with ...Expand for more
the rank Lt Colonel. We visited them at Misawa AB, Japan; Luke AFB, Arizona; Nellis AFB, Nevada; Moody AFB, Georgia; Hurlbert Field, Florida; Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; Scott AFB, Illinois; Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, and George G. Meade Army Post, Maryland. He now works with a cyber security firm in Fort Worth, Texas. They have a son and a daughter. Spending time with our grandchildren is an important part of our lives. We are committed to several activities in our church. We benefit from being near the University of Redlands, where we occasionally hear some music event or attend a lecture but regularly go to watch soccer, volleyball, and basketball. We enjoy travel. We make about one trip a year to Iowa for time with Theora's family, now usually to include a wedding of a grand niece or grand nephew. We have an RV and make a couple trips locally each year with an RV group. We have been to Europe in 2002, 2006, and most recently to go to the Oberammergau Passion Play 2010. Our trips to Europe have dovetailed with my genealogy hobby as we have been able to find documents on my wife's ancestors in the Netherlands. We have also made trips to India and Nepal in 1969, Japan in 1998 and 2000, Peru in 2003, China in 2008, and to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam in 2009, which ended with a tour of Seoul, Korea, while waiting for the connecting flight home. I also go into Mexico almost monthly to help a local organization with deliveries of donated food to orphanages. I do not plan to sign up for a Gold membership in Classmates. If you want to contact me, please send an e-mail directly to me. The part of my e-mail address to the left of the ampersand is rwhitman and the part to the right of the ampersand is alum.mit.edu
