Roi's Story
Life
I grew up in Savannah Georgia and as far back as I can remember I have always had a love for photography. At the age of 11 I started visiting a local photographer everyday after school, it was there that I apprenticed for five years and learned not only the craft, but also the art of photography. By the time I was 16 I had my own photography business. Old school mates remember me always having a camera around my neck. I worked at WJCL Television during 1971-1972 as their Commercial Photographer and after leaving I started FILMIT PRODUCTIONS, a commercial photography and film production company in historic downtown Savannah. I became a member of the International Photographers Union Local 600, IATSE, as a Director of Photography. Through FILMIT I produced, directed and filmed many television commercials and documentaries for local, regional and national companies. I left Savannah in 1977 and spent time in California and worked with Paramount Pictures, United Artist, Universal Pictures, and other Hollywood  New York Producers. I realized that Hollywood was not my cup of tea. I then returned to the South and Savannah, a city of beauty and charm that I have not found anywhere. In 1980 I was honored with an Emmy as a member of the sound crew for Outstanding Achievement in Film Sound Mixing on the CBS Television Production of ÂThe Ordeal of Dr. MuddÂ. Some of the approximately 35 films that I worked on were The Burt Reynolds films ÂThe Longest YardÂ, and ÂGatorÂ. Others include ÂRootsÂ, ÂThe Great SantiniÂ, ÂEast of EdenÂ, ÂThe Big Chill and ÂHopscotchÂ. In 1985 I took a break from the film business to explore some of my other talents. With the advent of Digital Photography and Computerized Video Production I have returned to the craft that has always been what I should be doing. Digital photography with its many creative techniques is fantastic, but the challenge still remains the same, capturing that one unique moment in time. As a Veteran Photographer/Filmmaker with over 40 years of looking through cameras, I see a world that many people seldom get to enjoy.
