Roland's Story

Here it is, more than 30 years later. I still live in Hanson. I've been living in the same house since August 1982. I studied Accounting in college and worked as an accountant for 17 years at a couple of different companies. I switched to IT 10 years ago. I love working with computers and should have gone into it from the beginning. 26 years in the same house, 12 years at one company and now 10 with my current employer, I guess I'm one of those people who don't relish change. I stick with the familiar even if it's unpleasant. There's safety in familiarity. I'm divorced (a long time ago, almost 18 years now) and have 1 son who's now 20 and studying IT in college. My parents are both still alive and living in Florida (although separately - divorced 27 years ago). My 2 brothers and 3 sisters are still alive and living in various locales across the US. Multiple nieces and nephews and several grand nieces and nephews. I've lost 2 nephews, 1 more than 20 years ago at just a few weeks old (SIDS), the other just a couple years ago in his mid twenties (Gunshot wound). It seems very strange to me that my younger brother is a grandfather. And it feels odd to be fast approaching 50. I think I'm getting nostalgic in my old age, which is probably why I'm filling all this stuff out. I'm in reasonably good health. Still have a full head of hair and just barely starting to get a little grey at the temples. No heart problems, no prescriptions, although I did dislocate my knee a couple times (Very painful. I don't recommend it) I read constantly, everything by Grisham, Stephen King, Dean Koontz and a few others. Always on the lookout for knew authors to get attached to. I've been reading the classics, Jane Austen, Dickens, Shakespeare (My God! who reads Shakespeare for pleasure?). I don't want to come across as trying to appear intellectual. I read the classics sparingly, mostly it's the popular stuff like Harry Potter. I watch at least 200 movies a year (about half at the theater the other half on DVD), plus re-watch who knows how many. There are a number of actors I follow and make it a point to see everything they do. And again, I'm always on the lookout for new talent. I saw the movie "The Bucket List" about a year ago and it started me thinking about what I want to accomplish before I die. I find my bucket list is fairly small. I've already done most of what I wanted to do (marriage, home, children, job). I never was one to want to cure cancer or climb Mount Everest. I don't want to be famous (although I wouldn't mind being rich). I find I have very little ambition left. Make sufficient money to live and retire comfortably, travel to Alaska, see the aurora borealis. That's pretty much about it. I've traveled some. Been to Hawaii twice, the Grand Canyon twice (hiked to the bottom and back). I've seen Old Faithful erupt, Devils Tower, Mo...Expand for more
unt Rushmore, had a buffalo nearly headbutt my car, and stood at the corner of Hollywood and Vine. I've been horseback riding in Bryce Canyon and gambling in Las Vegas and I even played in a Texas Hold'em poker tournament at Foxwoods. I've seen and done enough in my life and now am looking mostly for peace and comfort I guess. I was never particularly popular in school so I doubt many of my classmates will care about any of this. I'd love to hear from any of the class of 77 and hear about what you've done and seen in your life, where you've been. Share a memory or dreams of the future. --------------------------------------- OK - I'm going to update this a little bit. It's now May of 2010. I'm 51 years old - just saying it makes me feel so old. Still very little grey in my hair for which I am thankful. Went to Alaska last summer so I can cross that off my 'bucket list'. Still need to go back there in the winter to see the aurora just not sure I'm ready to brave the 50 below temperatures. Oh Yeah, another thing on my list - I want to drive a Rolls Royce, I don't think I'd ever be able to afford to own one but I've always wanted to drive one, even if it's just once. I'd like to see the Great Wall of China and take a tour of Denmark but those things aren't really on my list of things I must accomplish before I die. I'm planning my third trip to Hawaii for later this year assuming I don't lose my job. Like many people I worry about getting laid off in this economy. I've been very fortunate that in all the recessions and economic downturns during my lifetime I've managed to maintain my employment. I've now been with the same company for over 12 years. I've watched SO many of the people I've worked with here get laid off, and I'm still here - which is a good thing, but I'm still scared. For some reason this one worries me more than all the previous downturns. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 2013 Celebrated my 15th anniversary at work earlier this year. 15 years in the same job - Inconceivable! I like my job - it's comfortable. Ideally I'd stay here for the next 14 or 15 years, until I'm ready to retire (or I win the lottery). 54 years old, I live alone in a house I bought on the day of our 5th high school reunion. I like living alone. I'm good at it. I haven't done any traveling since Hawaii in December 2010. Florida a few times to visit my folks, Maine every Memorial Day to visit the family grave sites. I drive a hybrid car I bought a couple years ago. LOVE the gas mileage. I need it since I drive 60 miles each way to work and back. It's actually only my second brand new car , I usually buy used cars. I haven't attended any of our reunions in a long time (the 15th maybe?) I figure I'll go to the 40th in a few years.
