Roldan's Story
Went to El Toyon Elementary, Granger Jr. High, and SUHI. I was definitely a geek. Yes, wore the pocket protector, had one of the 1st Texas Instrument calculator on my belt, and played saxophone in the band.
My mom, an elementary school teacher in the Philippines drilled in me growing up: "... you have a choice, either to work hard now in school, and enjoy life with a good paying career, or take it easy road while in school and end up working hard for the rest of your life". After 9 years in college with a bachelor's degree and doctorate in pharmacy, I now live in San Bernardino County, close to the Big Bear Mountains, employed as a hospital clinical pharmacist.
I met my wife Kathy, a nurse from work. Although we've been together since 1990, our relationship is more stronger now than ever. Our long term engagement (9 years) out lasted both my brother's marriages! I firmly believe it is best wait marrying until you have established yourself financially and emotionally. We have 5 kids, all "4 legged". We firmly believe in pet adoption and are members of the local Humane Society.
I'm getting older, like a fine wine, full bodied and richer tastes. Enjoying life and looking forward to retirement.
Had LASIKS surgery, which lasted 7 years. Lost 120 lbs through diet, and exercise. With the loving support from wife. We work out together at the local gym, biking, hiking, and recently took up running. I even take the stairs at work. My passions are deep sea fishing, computers, technology, and personal finance. Best wishes to all my school mates! Hope to see you at the next reunion event.
School
Since I started wearing eyeglasses in the 5th grade, my grades improved, perhaps because I could now see the chalkboard! I had a serious crush on C.B. in 8th grade at Gr...Expand for more
anger JH which lasted till SUHI graduation. Too shy to talk, I became motivated to study hard in school, hopeful to join her in honor classes. My grades improved which set the tone to be accepted at UCSD. Looking back, I felt lucky that she was a motivator to my success. My SUHI 1978 yearbook caption was dedicated to her...."will miss the breath taking inspirations of Cathy Brown since the summer of 1974".
College
Thank you Mr Wiekamp, high school counselor, how pushed me to apply for UCSD and later UCSF. It was hard, but 9 years later and gallons of coffee, I was prepared for a career in the healthcare field. I remember not having much of a social life, but it was made easier with JC, my classmate, study partner, and best friend. I credit her with my decision to pursue pharmacy. She was indeed a positive influence in my life. Best Wishes to you all.
Workplace
I am a clinical pharmacist in a 420 bed hospital. It is considered a major heart center in the area and recently rank No 1 in the State for Orthopedic Surgeries. Although I used to run the department as pharmacy director for several years, I'm much happier in direct patient care. I specialize in managing the departments information technologies, providing drug information, drug , intravenous nutritional support and pharmacokinetics consulting. There is a satisfaction of knowing that my work directly impacts the care of our patients. Living close the San Bernardino Mountains is wonderful. My commute time is only 12 minutes. There's rarely any traffic, and homes here are very affordable. I'm happy to have chosen pharmacy as a career. The demands are high, work is plentiful, and salaries are lucrative. I plan to stay here and take advantage of their generous retirement benefits. Best wishes to all. RT
